Important Question about Deep Saros vers. 2.0

Post by bob »

Due to complaints about a possible GPL issue, we elected to remove this thread and save it in the moderator archive if further questions arise. Otherwise, the topic is DOA.

GPL issue ? What GPL issue?. Last time I checked the author clearly gave credit to the people he based his engine upon which was Fruit &Toga.
If he later borrowed some things from Ivanhoe, Robbo to make his engine stronger is no excuse to remove the thread. I presume none of the other engine authors aren't doing the same thing themselves. Stockfish is perfect example of that, and yet nobody here complain...

Here is some info:

Deep Saros ver. 2.3c3.
------------------------

Deep Saros has been completely rewritten, drawing on the best free software. Thanks to the ideas of RobboLito, Igorrit, Ivanhoe, Crafty, Glaurung and Fruit, Deep Saros has become a surprisingly strong engine, and balanced in all phases of the game. Currently, Deep Saros can compete with the strongest commercial and free programs, and develops a very high level of play.

Deep Saros is free for non-commercial use. It can be downloaded, installed and freely used for playing chess games and analysis of chess positions without commercial purpose.

Deep Saros has no graphical interface but can be used with any UCI-compatible chess graphical user interface (GUI) like the free Arena, Winboard, Scid and Josè chess interfaces or the commercial Fritz or Shredder chess interface. If you haven't already, first download the chess GUI of your choice, copy Deep Saros on your computer, and install it in the chess GUI.

The current version is the v.2.3c1 and is available for Windows and Linux (32-bit and 64-bit). In the 64-bit version (Windows and Linux), the speed increase is about 30% compared to the 32-bit version.

Currently the following UCI options are available:

- Hash: Amount of hash table memory used by the program in MB. Default 128, min 4, max 1024/16384 (32/64-bit).
- MultiThread: enable/disable the multi threading management. True (1) or false (0).
- CPUs: Maximum number of cores used by the analysis (min 1, max 4).
- Ponder: Have the engine think during its opponent's time. True (1) or false (0).

Deep Saros does not use Endgame Table Bases, because it has been shown to adequately manage the main types of end-game. In the short term, I do not expect to provide the DeepSaros with Table Bases.

Thanks.
DeepSoros 2.3c3 by Roberto Munter of Germary is public.

It is a rewrite of Ivan with a few other engine parts according to Roberto. He calls it Frankenstein because of the many engine parts to
it :).

Best,
Gerold.

The part taken from Houdini is the info text as Damir has posted above, it appears to be copied nearly verbatim from the Houdini web site.

"Houdini is free for non-commercial use. It can be downloaded, installed..."
"The program has no graphical interface but can be used with any UCI-compatible chess graphical user interface ..."
"Currently the following UCI options are available:"
"Hash: Amount of hash table memory used by the program in MB. Default 128, min 4, max 1024/16384 (32/64-bit)."

LOL,
Robert
