The more accurate question would be:
Which top GM plays at the level of the top engine :?:
And the answer is....NO ONE....

It would certainly be interesting to put Magnus Carlsen against a top engine. I'm not at all convinced that the point has been reached where the best human can't compete anymore.

Why Magnus?

Its like asking for the top rated engine to play every time in anticipation of fireworks (or resistance), when even No.2 or No.3 or for that matter No.20th is likely to be equally good against neurons.

Reversing the same we get- Why always Magnus?
Why not Kasimdzhanov or Liviu-Dieter Nisipeaneau or Grischuk Vs the silicons ?

No offense meant... just an observation.

I just picked the youngest of the 2800 bunch. Anand doesn't play against silicon these days, Kramnik might lack stamina and Topalov's style is probably too aggressive.

But a solid stategist like e.g. Leko might also be an interesting pick.

Leko would certainly have more chance, than the fashion model :-)

I think it is apples to oranges.
Humans make better strategic moves and computers play flawless tactics.

In a long match the best silicon will win, because humans always make tiny little mistakes here and there, no matter how good they are. The computers will flawlessly exploit these little errors and win.

However, to truly understand some deep strategic move often requires a human.

Eventually, even this distinction will disappear. For that matter, computers will eventually outthink us in all areas.

Well, the human will compete and will be crushed....I mean think about it for a second....we have engines playing at 3200 Elo and the latest Fide list has three humans rated +2800....I know that you can't compare directly the list of Fide and the list of the computer chess engines becuase we have two different polls, but still....even if the difference is around 200 Elo,the humans stand no chance at all....
