Multi core clock terminology?

Post by luisrodg »

When the clock speed of a multi core cpu is specified, is that for every core or in total?

I ask this because i read news of a dual core 1.5 GHz phone coming out and i dont know if this means 1.5 per core or in total.

Current high end phones like the HTC Evo, iPhone 4 and Samsung Epic have single core 1 GHz and they perform extremely well, so if the 1.5 is per core, the permonce of that phone will be incredible...

As far as I am aware when a CPU is quoted a speed, that is the clock speed for the entire CPU, which means, each core of that CPU will run at the specified speed. Never the clocks are added.

It depends a lot on what CPU/architecture it is. 2 core Arm is different than 2 Core Atom for example. But generally yes, the more cores, the better.
