Mate in 1, 2 CD recommendation?

Post by kaissa »

Hello to all,

I am teaching chess to some kids. I need to have several mate in 1, mate in 2, preferably organized by a theme. I think Chessbase had something about a decade ago. Can you recommend me a CD if it exits?

Thanks for your time,

Take a look for TASC Chess training CD 2.

It does a bit more than you asked for and is a bit long in the tooth (won't run on Vista) but is otherwise very good for school level chess training.

There are online collections of mate in N you could grab for free.

You might also look into the book Chess: 5334 Problems, Combinations and Games by Lazlo Polgar and Bruce Pandolfini. (http://www.amazon.com/Chess-5334-Proble ... 1579125549) Affectionately known as "the brick", it is a huge collection of Mate In X problems in a variety of difficulties. There was a community effort several years ago to produce an open source version--supposedly with Polgar's blessing--and so with a little hunting around the Wild Wild Web, you should be able to find the resulting .pgn file. (I have one named "5334-Polgar.pgn", but have long since forgotten where I downloaded it from.)

Found it: http://www.qno.de/schach/polgar.zip (and, yes, I own a hardcopy of the book.)

That is a very good site but it is geared towards problems, a far serious field for my kids. It has helpmates, selfmates and a whole lot more. It is a mine of knowledge. Thank you very much.

Thanks, exactly what I was looking for. Suprised to learn that Polgar gave his blessing for it.

Here are some EPD positions that are mate in 1 and mate in 2:
http://cap.connx.com/EPD/dm001.epd.bz2
http://cap.connx.com/EPD/dm002.epd.bz2
http://cap.connx.com/EPD/dm1.epd.bz2
http://cap.connx.com/EPD/dm2.epd.bz2

They have been compressed with bzip2, and programs like 7-zip can decompress them for you.

DB books has a large collection of free PGN files from popular books that have been released.I use these these with my iPaq PPC and PocketFritz3 and it is like having all these books in the palm of your hand in crystal clear viewing.I mainly only choose the pgn files that have critical positions which require the winning move to be found.

There is also another part of this site that has even more books that have had the positions in them converted to pgn, but you need a password to open them.
