Re: Some CCT 12 Games on the FICS server

Post by Eelco de Groot »

The results after round 3 copied from the official site from CCT 12, no programs with a perfect score after this round! My bets Crafty and The Baron both win a game in this round, Crafty by beating Junior that is found in the lower half of the table after a loss to strongly operating Ikarus in the previous round. No result is shown for Amyan - AlmondX, I I see they did play in previous rounds so I was wrong saying they probably withdrew, in previous version of this post.

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

Should not Shredder have lost its game vs Hiarcs? It was 2 pawns behind last time i looked, yet the draw was agreed among the operators.
Is such thing allowed ?

After 56... Kg7 from Shredder, I suppose Stefan offered a draw.

It is a tablebase draw so I think the programs would have concluded it is a draw if no errors were made or things like disconnects. I suppose there is some room here in the rules for agreeing to a mutual draw?
Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

I think this position is an example why the evaluation for edge passed pawns in Stockfish is too high in these endgames; the edge pawn gets a bonus for White still having a Rook, not for being a connected passer but here even two passed pawns can't win. In Rainbow Serpent the edge pawn gets less (-) -I think, but not completely sure here- but because here is is a connected passed pawn (+) supported by a Rook (+) but on the wrong side (-) and even blocking one pawn (-) the situation actually may be worse if you compare the eval. It goes from +3.79 to +2.86 after almost a minute. Hmm, I guess Stockfish will at least show +3, for having two passed pawns, even if it does not give a bonus for connected passed pawns it does give the general bonus for a passed pawn supported by another pawn, that is also still in Rainbow Serpent of course. Stockfish's passed pawn bonuses are just higher. But I get maybe a bit off topic in this thread

At 50 % CPU a quick check by Rainbow Serpent with no tablebases to help, let alone Shredder's 6 men bases which would be needed to see a draw:

24.01 0:53 +2.86 57.Rg5+ Kh6 58.Rf5 Ra4 59.Rh5+ Kg7 60.Rg5+ Kh6 61.Ke3 Ra3+ 62.Kd4 Ra4+ 63.Ke5 Ra5+ 64.Kf6 Ra6+ 65.Ke7 Ra4 66.Kd6 Rd4+ 67.Kc7 Ra4 68.Kc6 Rc4+ 69.Kd7 Ra4 70.Ke7 (31.394.376) 592
best move: Rh5-g5 time: 0:57.188 min n/s: 596.467 nodes: 34.110.169

Yes, a polyglot book error caused TheBaron to resign. I offered to reply the game but the tournament director said it was not possible because at the time we were using automated pairings.

Thanks Sam,
and good luck with Hannibal. It seems another great engine stands for the door.
