Just a comment: I would like to encourage others who post test positions to precede them with the words "Test position". The reason is simply that not only does it identify the type of content, but if anyone should decide to search for test positions using the search function, they will be that much easier to find. Just my 2 cents.
This move was played by Kasparov in a simul in Zurich at the city's 2000-year jubilee, and attests to his amazing ability even in simuls. True, it is winning, and the obvious choice of 36.Nxf7 would still win, but his move is nevertheless stronger and engines have an incredibly hard time finding it.

Re: Test postion: Monster Kasparov move in simul
Instead of 5:31 and depth 25 on your 2 x 3.6GHz system, Stockfish-1.6.2 finds g6 in 0:41 at depth 22 on my dual quad 2.26GHz Nehalem MacPro.Albert Silver wrote: [D]6k1/R4pp1/3N4/3P2Pp/3P2b1/3K4/7r/8 w - - 0 36

Re: Test postion: Monster Kasparov move in simul
Yes, I actually saw that also on CB today and was playing around with it on my computer. I think the position is easily winning with Nxf7, but Kasparov gets a lot of credit for seeing that g6 is much stronger, especially considering this was a simul.

Re: Test postion: Monster Kasparov move in simul
Amazing! And it even works after black alternatives at the 38th move.
Kasparov's capabilities are astonishing. I noticed it first in 1985, when he was giving a blindfold simul exhibition with 10 games, even with clock handicap, 10*40 moves in 90 minutes. In other words, Kasparov had to play (up to) 400 moves in 90 minutes without sight of the board. He scored 9:1.
One opponent was a computer, a 16 bit Mephisto.

Kasparov had already sacrificed a knight on e6 (which the computer should have declined, but that was 25 years ago). And now, 30.Rxg7+!. This is easy for comps nowadays, but I wanted to show what Kasparov could do even during a blindfold simul with clock handicap. Hence it is clear that he wouldn't consider comps to be a threat for him yet, at that time and for some more years. In the same year, he also played a simul against 32 chess computers and won all games.

Re: Test postion: Monster Kasparov move in simul
Gaviota v0.74.41 <cough>, gets it in 28 seconds on my crappy pentium 32 bits 1.8 Ghz of my office. Only one core, 9 plies, with a beautiful smile, which becomes a laughter at 52.7 seconds.Jouni wrote:King of tactics in Pentium 2400:
