Crafty 23.1 scaling problem on Nehalem octa

Post by Hugo »

Hello

I have a problem, using crafty23.1 on a nehalem W5580 machine. It is a real octa, no hypethreading.
I am using Jim Ablett's 64bit compile and his uci adapter. I reach 8000-9000Kns on that machine.
I tested it on an Intel skulltrail octa, and get 18.000Kns.
Has anyone an idea, what is wrong?

Kind regards, Clemens Keck

Your machine has two W5580 cpus, each with 4 physical cores? Running at 3.2Ghz?

I run 23.1 on my Nehalem 8 core Mac Pro (two quad-core cpus at @2.26Ghz---E5520, I think). I did a 64-bit compile using Intel's icc compiler, with profile-guided optimization. I rountinely reach 22000Kns (22M nps), and have seen 25M.

I don't know what's wrong, as I usually run Crafty from the command line :shock: without UCI conversion. But I'd expect to see 30M+ nps from your system.

I've previously posted results from a Nehalem octal box, and saw no problems at all. I was seeing numbers > 24M and I think the box was 2.33ghz or so although you can find the posts here from early this year if you dig back far enough. No reason it would do poorly for you and so well for us. Are you certain you are running 8 threads? (mt=8). Do you see all 8 actually busy running the "crafty" process? Not using some obscenely over-sized hash table, etc?

Hello

here is my used crafty.rc
#egtb
tbpath=
cache=32M
ponder on
computer
mode tournament
swindle off
learn 0
book off
log=off
mt=8
smpnice=0
timebook 80 8
hash=1024M
hashp=256M
exit

Is there something wrong with it? I am still getting 8000-9000KNs. This is dualcore speed. W5580 has 8 real cores with 3,325Mhz . I expect 25.000Kns average.

Thanks for any help.

A single W5580 has 4 physical cores, not 8. You have two?

That looks ok. How are you running Crafty?

Step 1:

run this test with mt=0 (one thread) to see what the single-cpu nps is. Then run it with 2, 4, 6 and 8. Report the numbers here and I'll take a look. First step, though is to check the single-cpu number to see if it looks normal.

I had assumed this was a "dual-package" box (two cpu chips, 4 cores per chip). Otherwise you have probably hit the nail on the head. If the chip appears to have 8 cores, it has hyper-threading turned on, and this should be eliminated as has been previously explained, by going into the bios setup and turning "logical processors" off (or whatever his bios says). I'd also get rid of "turbo-boost" and turn that off as well.
