Homer Chess Setup as Admin - Why?

Post by terminator »

Why does a free engine need to be setup by the administrator of the computer? Isn't this overzealousness?

I think it is nothing to do with it being a free engine. It is Windows making sure you have permission to install on the machine you are using.

I don't use any free engines that require running a setup.
If hundreds of authors offer their free engines only with setups,
imagine the mess !

Matthias.
My engine was quite strong till I added knowledge to it.

Also, we shouldnt be trying to install chess programs on someone elses computer and complain when it requires you to be the admin.

Hi Matthias !

It might be the right way for you, but it's not useable for the normal user out there (no computerchess expert/fan).

My typical customer plays in a chessclub, only has Fritz installed, doesn't know anything about engine rating lists or tourneys and will use homer for analyze his games.

Best,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,
I understand your point.
The question is why don't you offer an alternative package without setup for us freaks ?
Best,
Matthias.

Well, Homer needs admin rights for the copyright protection und Windows offers it automaticly if it detect that a setup is running. (ok, not 100% true, but basicly).

Best,
Daniel
