Why wasn't strelka terminated?

Post by terminator »

Strelka is a clear breach of software copyright like a bandit wearing a balaclava wielding a shotgun who raids the local 711. The wheels of motion should have been set in place to bar it from being downloadable, tested in various sites etc.

Criminal proceedings should have been brought against Yuri Osipov and the Russian police should have left no stone unturned in bringing the perpetrators to justice.

Talk on some forums of including Strelka's stolen code in programs like crafty/toga should not be allowed.

Discussion is fine, but download links will be removed.

Strelka is open source, even if it is a clone its no longer a violation of anything as far as GPL goes.

How many open sourced programs of say a stolen Microsoft/Apple software exist? MS or Apple would quickly do some butt kicking and get those removed.

While Vas is not MS or Apple, he did not give his consent for Rybka to be decompiled/reverse engineered and then put on offer as "open source". Where in the open source licence does it say that stolen programs can be legalised by open sourcing them?

This type of comment really bugs me. When a company sells a product it was meant to be use like it was designed for, not for someone to take it apart steal some of its ideas and then make them theirs.
The copywright protection act in the US forbids people to do just what you imply and the thiefs can be held libel in a court of law.
Take an example for DVD movies. You will see an FBI warning at the start of each one. Just because you may have the ability to clone the DVDs does not make it legal and you can still be fined and sentensed to jail for doing so. Basically the same laws apply to stealing software.
I have to remind people that for 15 years prior to my retirement I worked for the largest software house in Fremont, California so I became very aware of the software laws.

Nid,

Nobody is forcing you to read about Strelka, if you do not like the discussion, just skip this thread over.

I have a question concerning Strelka's reputation.

Why does one group of independent testers (CEGT) completely ignore Strelka, while another group of independent testers (CCRL) include almost 2000 Strelka games in its database?

It appears that one group "sees evil" and the other "sees no evil".
