I have accepted my nomination for moderator.

Being a previous moderator, I know the job is tough and thankless, but without people doing it this place would be utter chaos.

My philosophy is pretty simple to lay out.

1. No posts will be tolerated regarding pirated material and illegal links. This is pretty self explanatory.

2. No editing of user posts. If the content is offensive it will be removed and the user will be notified why in private.

3. Unless a thread is out of control where content has to be consistently removed due to abuse or is simply "too hot to handle", no thread will be locked.

4. Three strikes and you are out. If you are banned three times for whatever reasons during the moderation term, you will be removed until the new team is elected in. This is not preschool, and I am not a babysitter. If you can not behave like an adult with your peers, then you will not be here. Plain and simple.

I do not wish to be a moderator to change things back to like they were 10 years ago, nor do I wish to implement drastic changes. As all things in life, they evolve. So has the CCC. With change, the people must adapt and accept new ideas and surroundings. Everyone has a voice and deserves to be heard, no matter their understanding or knowledge on the issue.

That is it.

Above all, I wish all the other candidates good luck and no matter who wins the CCC will be better for it.

my name is Thorsten Czub.
i am 40 and have a son and a girl-friend.
I am doing computerchess since 1979.
In the 80ties i was a writer for the
german computerchess magazine Computer-Schach + Spiele.
then i had my own computerchess-department, selling
hardware (dedicated units) and software, and my own
computerchess-magazine, both named: "Schachcomputerwelt".

in the 90ties i operated several chess programs such
as Mchess. Worked with Chris Whittington on ChessSystemTal
and participated at several tournaments/championships
(Aegon-Tournament, Munich, Paderborn, Paris championships).
Also with other programmers (Mark Uniacke, Christophe Theron,...).

in 1996 i worked for Schach-Niggemann, a big computerchess
seller here in germany.

I organized some tournaments, the Odyssee-tournament
and in 2001 the BELCT2001 in Berlin.

computerchess is my hobby. i do it almost each day.
i still have a few dedicated units, and test some programs.

in 1996 RGCC, a computerchess-newsgroup was destroyed, or discussions
there were made impossible due to anonymous people trolling and
stalking arround. a group of arround 20 people came to the conclusion
that we would have to move to a moderated newsgroup, the so called
FOUNDER group of CCC.
So we founded CCC and until today this is a moderated newsgroup
that helps to let us make our hobby without trolls stopping us from
doing so.

in the last time i was a moderator in CCC in a team
with Graham Banks, Albert Silver.

the most important thing is that the people, programers and
computerchess-enthusiasts can exchange their
ideas and friendship without trolls beeing able to
stop this.

if somebody is out for trouble and begins to stalk certain
members or trolls arround i would use
the tools the forum software gives, that means
deleting insults (if many people quotes the insult in their text too)
or delete the whole message (if nobody quoted it so far).
or banning the guy (he gets 3 warnings).

I am 48 years of age and live in Auckland, New Zealand.
I have been married for 24 years and have three sons.
I am the Head of Learning Support at Edgewater College. This involves overseeing a team of support staff, and developing and implementing teaching programmes for students with learning difficulties.

I have had an interest in computer chess since the 80s.
I owned several dedicated chess computers, organised computer chess tournaments, published tournament booklets, participated as an operator in several man v machine matches and wrote reports for the NZ Chess magazine on computer chess.

As a chess player, I was club captain of the Papatoetoe Chess Club for 10 years and club captain of the Howick Chess Club for 3 years.
Over the board I won several club championships, but my OTB rating would only have been 1900-2000 ELO.
I found correspondence chess more to my liking and did much better at that, winning the NZ Championship in 1994-95 and representing my country in several international events.
My correspondence level was around 2400 ELO.

I am currently inactive as a chess player, with all my energy having been focused on testing engines and moderating CCC.
I am one of the founding members of the CCRL testing group.

I have been a CCC moderator for the last two terms (working with Bob and Peter Skinner firstly, Albert Silver and Thorsten currently).
In my opinion, both of these teams worked effectively together.

My main goal as part of these moderation teams has been to help keep CCC a club where members are respectful to each other.
I have made some mistakes along the way (as I'm sure have all moderators), but I have always tried to treat members fairly and with respect.

I try to deal with members in private initially to keep things on track. Where I remind members publicly to keep things respectful, you can be assured that I've usually had contact with them in private on previous occasions.

I have come to see bans as a last resort, and I prefer short bans (similar to timeouts).
We all join this club because we enjoy discussing computer chess and I know that I wouldn't like to be deprived of that opportunity for a long period. People have different temperaments and that needs to be taken into account. A short cooling off period is usually all that is needed.
However, when somebody obviously joins purely to abuse members or create havoc, I support closing that account for good sooner rather than later.

I believe that too many of us treat new members with suspicion and often hostility or scorn.
My belief is that we should be making them feel welcome and respect that they may want to ask questions to which many of us take the answers for granted.

I recently asked for members opinions on certain issues that have been contentious (editing of posts, temporary removal of threads, and locking threads).
Due to the results of those polls, I have given an undertaking (if re-elected) to delete posts rather than edit them, clean up threads without removing them temporarily, and to lock threads only on the rare occasions where it is deemed the wise thing to do.

As a member of a moderation team, I prefer to see 2-1 majority decisions where necessary (on matters of bans usually).
Expecting all decisions to be unanimous leads to too much inaction.
It is common sense that each moderator will need to make spot decisions on such things as deleting posts and giving warnings in private when their fellow mods are not online.

I realise that some may feel that because I'm a member of the CCRL testing team, I shouldn't be moderating CCC.
To that I would point out that I've always encouraged all testing groups and individual testers to post their results, and have given them positive support as much as possible.

I also realise that some feel I've already been moderating here for too long, and that new blood is needed.
I can understand that point of view and have no argument against it.

I wish all other candidates the best in the upcoming elections.

I'm still active in playchess.

Apart from chess,I like playing Quake LAN Party! Football, watching movies, reading books, playing cricket with friends, themepark, snow bowling, walking, spicy foods,Girls *,shopping.

[Related to Computer chess]
Been active in computer chess since 1999.Don't own any kind of chess computers.Registered in Talkchess around 2002.
I play against engines occasionally(and eventually get defeated most of the time ] and I conduct tourneys and I have my own web page where I post results, group of members participate in my engine prediction contest in tournament matches section. I visit talkchess frequently and I have been very very active over the past 6 months running tournaments, posting results and managing the contest, debating some topics in Gerneral topics forum and occasionally posting in programming forum.

[Moderation Philosophy]

It is almost similar to what rest of the nominees have written, but I will write some anyway.

[About Bans]
-I give short bans to those who repeatedly violate the charter(after all 3 severe warnings have been expired), I don't ban members a lot, I will let the other moderators decide for themselves, if the two moderators propose ban I will automatically accept it, as I'm not interested in banning.

EDIT:Okay- I decide proposing short bans(1 week) for those who keep violating charter or those keep offending others.Initially I had stated that I would wait for other moderators to propose whatever ban time they plan to.
This to stop some members from trolling all the time.

[About Newbies]
-I will make sure that all the newbies are treated properly and i will make sure they are welcomed even if they ask too much innocent questions. If they are not treated well,Then I would just write some private message to those who offend the newbie. If the newbie is behaving like a troll whose intention was to register and cause nuisance, then he will be given warnings, if he continues to do the same thing warnings again then later short ban after discussing with moderators.

[About Charter]
-I will make sure that members follow the rules and don't violate the charter, if I receive complaints, then I will look into it and evaluate, if the message is offensive or if it contains something that violates the charter, then it will be removed permanently, and I will notify the member by sending him a pm.

[About Editing and Locking]
-I don't support editing and locking the thread.I co-operate well as a team. However, If the member writes some long post and includes some insulting statement which is against the charter, then I will copy paste his post in a pm and send it to him, and explain it to him why it was deleted and that would save him(and our) time and would give him the benefit of editing the insulting parts himself, before he starts shouting over at moderators and whining in the forum that his messages were deleted.

[About Spam]
-I would delete spam content from some new user whose intention was to advertise his products that is unrelated to computer chess or it was against the charter. But then again, I do allow off topic if it is genuine.

[...]

-If any of the members use the most vulgar language in posts, it would be deleted instead of edited.

[...]

-I don't allow porn talks or content as some of it have been posted in the past, Think of some young kid visiting talkchess.I would just delete it immediately when it appears in a sub thread or a thread.

[...]

-If some members create unnecessary duplicate new thread when there are already some unlocked threads about the particular topic (Strelka for example), I would notify the member that there is no need to and I will consult with other moderators on whether it need be deleted or moved.

If there are any contradictions to any of the above, please kindly send me a pm or post in talkchess.I will give it a thought and make corrections.

So,That's it.

I'm probably the youngest member to be running such an election, but age doesn't play the role here.
I would like to thank many of those who wish to nominate me but have not had a chance to do so,and all my voters in advance, and also I would like to extend my thanks to previous term moderators, and I wish other candidates the best in the election. :)

Regards.

I'm 37, single, and have now been involved with chess for 20 years as it stands.

As far as chess is concerned, I was rated 2200+ FIDE for a few years while I competed actively, and have a few titles (champion of Rio de Janeiro, 2nd in Brazilian Club Championships, etc.).

I worked for Convekta for a few years, and was a key designer in Chess Assistant 6, and have beta-tested numerous programs and engines. Nowadays this involves more backgammon and poker software to be honest, however chess is unquestionably my first and truest love as far as games go.

Moderating is not a job I relish, however I've been a member of CCC since it first started, and this is a way of giving back to the community. I've been a moderator for CTF and have been a moderator for CCC now, working closely with Graham.

In terms of moderation philosophy, I support the charter and what it covers: no piracy, blatant advertisement, etc. I am an advocate of 'attack the argument, not the person'. The new forum structure brought about new 'powers', if one can call them as such, such as editing posts of others. This was new terrain for the moderators, and caused some issues. In the end, the membership made it clear that any form of editing (we tried just removing insults and the like) was unacceptable, so now if a post is problematic, it is removed.

I'm not fond of bans, but sometimes there really isn't much choice.

As to the transparency or visibility of the moderators, it is obviously dependent on the circumstances. If only one member is involved, then a behind-the-scenes approach is often the simplest way, but if a virtual brawl breaks out in a thread, staying quiet and invisible is clearly not best.

Above all, my moderation philosophy is about trying to help CCC remain a civil and hospitable place for the members, though one can never please everyone. Some decisions are very clearcut, but many others tend to be less so, in which case one can only follow one's judgment.

Peace,

Albert Silver

I am 51 years old and i have been married for 30 years to the same woman .. we were never blessed with children

Professionally i am the Managing Partner of a 75+ man CPA(Accounting) firm based in NYC and i have held that position for 7 years.
i joined the firm when i graduated University in 1977 and i have been with the same firm ever since.
during the course of my professional career i have participated in business related arbitration hearings from both sides of the isle

my 30 year interest in computer chess dates back to 1977 when the first dedicated chess computers were released for sale to the public and i have been collecting them and playing against them and playing them against each other ever since.
in pursuit of my hobby and also by virtue of being a member here i have had contact with collectors from every corner of the globe and have been personally enriched by the different customs and diversity one encounters when in contact with people from every nationality and walk of life.
I have also had the pleasure to meet several of the members here in person over the years

I would be the first to admit that if you want as your moderator someone who is an expert in the latest and greatest PC Engine or an Expert in Chess Programming or an Expert in running PC engine
matches then you could not possibly pick someone with less knowledge then me.
it is well known here that i know next to nothing about these area's of our common hobby

I have been an active member of the CCC ever since its formation nearly 10 years ago as a member i have contributed a great deal of my free time by answering literally hundreds (perhaps even thousands?) of questions in my area of interest and i have contributed a good deal of money as well(donations,,holding contests giving away computers ..etc etc)
and of course i have had questions answered for me as well
it was and is a great pleasure for me to be a member here

My moderation philosophy is very straight forward..

1)
I will DELETE posts that are in violation of the tenets of the charter and if possible i would try to
confer with my fellow moderators about the offending post(i realize that some posts must be deleted with immediacy)
I will NEVER EDIT or MOVE or otherwise interfere with the posts of another member

the change to the new forum software last March 06 brought with it unintended new powers where moderators could edit posts changing at the very least the context of what is written .
For EIGHT long years( before the software change over )the forum worked perfectly fine with
moderators having only the ability to Delete posts and i cannot recall at any time during those years where any moderator expressed a desire or a need to have any more then the ability to Delete or Erase a post

Just because one HAS the power to exercise more control over another members post does not necessarily mean one ought to USE that power

2)
A post is an expression of some ones thoughts and idea's and i will ALWAYS notify a member that his post has been deleted and i will try to explain to that member the reasons for it's deletion
i simply see it as the humane thing to do
i consider DELETION and NOTIFICATION as a single act of moderation

3)
Banning of course should be used in very rare instances where a member has been given ample opportunity to comply with the charter
i am for a period of staggered bannings with the first to last one month..the second ..three months.. and then finally..for the duration of the current moderation team's term.

4)Software Piracy...
i am against it in all of its forms and i will delete any post in which it rears its ugly head

In my humble opinion..as an active posting member of these boards for 10 years i can state that the VERY BEST moderators we have had here over the years were those who were not proactive ,interfering with the free flowing exchange of thoughts and ideas, but rather those moderators that stayed in the background almost invisible to the eye.
the results of which could be seen in a club that ran very smoothly and which rose from its infancy to reach Worldwide recognition as the Premiere place in the world to discuss issues related to Computer Chess

i ask to be installed as a moderator to return the club to the way it was not long ago and i am sure
that all members will consider carefully their vote
there is a clear difference in your choice of candidates and the direction and future of the club is in your hands

it is time for a change..

My name is Steve Blincoe.. and i am running for Moderator of the Computer Chess Club Regards
Steve

My name is Guenther Simon and I am 45 with a girlfriend, no children.
In the past I studied literature and philosophy and I also have an
education as a programmer. I am working for the data processing
department of a big print company.

In 1984 I started to play for a local chess club in Regensburg, Germany,
(where I live), before I was just a lousy coffeehouse chess player.
Meanwhile I am rated a bit over 2000 compared to Elo.
In the mid 80ies I also got interested in chess computers, which led
to the ownersip of a few Novags and Mephistos. In the mid 90ies though
I completely turned over to PC Chess, which is one of my main hobbies
until today, beneath tennis, cooking and cinema.
At that time I started to watch the CC scene in the net and I got a member
of CCC in 1999 IIRC.
I have already been a mod for a while in the WB forum and I have good contacts
to a lot of programmers all over the world because of my RWBC homepage,
the free WB/UCI chess programs chronology and through live broadcasts from Leo(WBEC),
Olivier(ChessWar) and myself.

Regarding my moderator philosophy the main points will be:
1. common sense 2. common sense 3. absolute neutrality.
Of course I fully support the charta of CCC especially the parts about
software piracy and spam.
I don't see any reason for editing posts. Posts which contain illegal stuff,
personal attacks or insults should be deleted, whatever else content might
be in a post.
Locking threads might be necessary in some special cases, but should be handled
carefully.

I wish CCC would rise again to a bit higher level and stay more on topic, even if
some members already think it is mainly a chat forum.
Of course it is up to the members to apply the content, the moderation can only
provide an atmosphere where people, who have something to say, feel welcome
and not oppressed or drowned by irrelevance.

Finally I want to thank all moderators of the current term for their good work,
especially during the major forum changes.
My thanks also for the people who nominated me.

I will very briefly focus on the subjects that in my oppinion comes closest to this club and it's general interests.

I've turned 41 this year, and I have been playing chess since I was 22. I have been given me a lot of experience with the danish chessworld. And a few very good friends in addition. At some point, through encouragement from others, I began to write chessarticles from tournaments to our clubmagazin, and had the funny and surprising exprience to see them dublicated in the newspapers.

I enjoy to help, if and when I can. Basically, I find that giving assistance to somebody in need is more important than some much other.
Logic and humour often comes together in my book, which means that CCC is seldomly a boring place to visit. Hovewer, the good mystery is more fun than well-known truths, in case the they don't collide.

With regards to a moderation philosophy, I see a charter.
When it comes to that, I'm probably more in the line of being a tiny bit stern, a tiny bit that is, since I'm much into have things said rather than have them supressed, and then to see them explode later. This practise has proven itself before, mostly for the better.
The issue about editing has been rasied recently; well, I'm a deleter... Practise from another wellknown forum, where I been 've a moderator for nearly a year, showed, that "that" practise is not a problem.

Banning; It's not something I normally think of, unless there's severe problems in some case, and then it's something between the moderators. Single actions only if really forced, and then only sustained till it has been agreed on with the others.

To me it's important that moderators can work well as a team, and while the "call" is there, adapt to the situation, but not get caught by the steamina. Keep it cool :)
Henrik
