But we had to win to get 13/14 to be = 1st with Rybka. In round 14 we get by sods law the worst opening of the tournament.

Do you have any comments on Rybka v Hiarcs from this tournament?

Or did you restart/re-upload it?

That's why after the unusual 12.a3 you should always play 12...cxd4 to have an open file that the engines will find something to do with it. I guess you've learned that now.

Normally you will reply saying that this game ended with a Hiarcs loss and there are no "if".....

As someone who is not familier with ICC I can not control what our book plays. When we play in the CB GUI I can. The Hiarcs own book plays whatever move is next in its list.

When I use the CB GUI which I cant on ICC I can place a small .ctg opening book on top and control the opening. The CB GUI will always use the .ctg 1st and then when out of this it will then use the Hiarcs UCI own book.

The book that was used for the tournament over the weekend was the large release Hiarcs own book - something we need to think about for next ICC tournament. Maybe there is a way to create a small book in the Chess partner interface to do what our small CB book does!?

I think that changing the contempt factor during the game is not allowed
and it is only legal to do it before the game.

Hi George,

You can change settings during a game it has 2 effects. If it is yur turn to move as you 'ok' the change the engine will move instantly. If it is your opponents move all Hiarcs onder will stop.

If you want to try it play a game on Playchess with any engine. While the game is playing right click on engine pane and click properties and make your changes. I was using Chess Partner yesterday a GUI I am not familiar with but it seemed to work the same.

I very much enjoyed this tournament it was great fun and we just got bad luck in round 14.

The Black moves was not played like a Grandmaster in my eyes. Sorry.

BTW: What was with the 50 moves Rules?
In my eyes black (Hiarcs) played in move 149 a 50 rules move and loss a pawn.

A draw was not enough we had to win so when we got into the Father type position I changed contempt to the value of 1 pawn this obviously messed things up.

I think that changing the contempt factor during the game is not allowed
and it is only legal to do it before the game.

You may be right I looked at the rules but can find nothing against it.

Other rules were broken during the tournament. erdo(zap) was allowed to enter on the day. Rybka could not kibitz its evaluation which the rules say it should. These are minor things and the tournament was played despite them.

If I broke the rules in game 14(I can find no specific rule) but if i did then I resign game 14 - oh I think I lost anyway

Also there is no way of detecting people doing this so.....

Hmm... I don't think you 'get' an opening. You choose to play it.

Why do you allow your engine to pick bad opening lines if you need to win? Instructing it to pick a strong one might be much more effective than fiddling with the contempt factor...

By my definition
bad opening with black is an opening that leads to a lost position.

If the opening was leading to a drawn position I cannot describe it as the worst opening of the tournament.

Draw with black could certainly be a good result in case that rybka was losing the last round and the hiarcs team could not be certain in the beginning of the game that rybka is going to win the last round.
