Problem with Palm is the Paltry duration of the battery and the imposibility to replace the internal contrivance with any battery you can have as a replacement.
I already had the experience in a plane, with the Palm going dead after just a couple of hours of playing chess.
Remember the chess engine is all the time running, so it consumes resources as a country in war.
I advice as a better solution one of those little notebooks that almost you can keep in a pocket. At last they give to you 4-5 hours battery life.

My best

Thanks for all the good advice and info-- that PDA review is amazingly comprehensive, though such things age quickly.

I did consider a palmtop/sub-notebook but the price is prohibitive right now-- maybe later.

I have heard of an external batter pack for the palm that connects to the docking interface... might be useful. I definitely need more than two hours of "on" time.

Hi Christophe,
some years ago I bought a Sony CLIE NX70V. Since then I wait for a version adapted for OS 5.0....
Do we have a chance in near future?

I don't think so.

I use one on long plane flights - it uses four AA batteries.
I use NiMH rechargable AA batteries, and recharge them when
I get to my destination so I can use them again on the flight back.

The one I use is similar to this one:

For your info, I have a Palm Tungsten E2 which I charged last night and started it playing engine/engine games this morning. It is right now at the 6 hour mark of continous play and still going. I think it cost me $150 and it takes up to 1 GB SD memory card.
(The 150x 1GB card cost me $20. The programs playing are Fruit and Toga.)

I am instead looking for the most "featureful" Palm OS chess program to aid me in playing, studying, setting up positions, etc. while on the road. Seems like this is the best bet when I don't want the bulk of a laptop, as it seems the Palm chess software is generally stronger than the portable dedicated units?

Thanks in advance...
The Palm programs are certainly stronger than the dedicated units.
The SSDF ratings listed at http://web.telia.com/~u85924109/ssdf/list.htm are

Code: Select all

Rating + - Games Won Av. opp
Hiarcs 9.5a/9.6 Palm TungstenE OMAP 126 2396	43	-42	274	54%	2370
Chess Genius 1.4 SX1 OMAP 310 120 MHz	2151	50	-48	210	60%	2081
Chess Tiger 14.9 Palm m515 16MB 42MHz	2103	69	-74	100	39%	2182
(Christophe has yet to release an ARM version of Chess Tiger - if he does, it should leapfrog Genius )
What??????! ALM parm????????? Oh that would be great!!!!!

I was once trying to get hold of an arm palm for the tiger, something to get my teeth into and which was to have had some bite to it. It sure would have been a bit better! But it was just one of my many plans, and still, it will just have to wait in lion I prey.
