It's really a very simple mate. based on the 2 Bishop smothered mate theme but my old brain felt rushed to answer..mistake!

I needed to put more time looking at the Bc6 line rather than the Rd8 line. :?

Surprised the White master missed it? Heat of the battle I guess? Regardless of playing strength, I've seen about every blunder known and have committed them too!

Isn't that the truth, no clue what so ever in a real game. As HGM states, in a real game you may have been planning for it. In that case chances are good that you may have seen it. :wink:
He probably did see it way off, the pattern anyway and in time trouble fudged it with a safe move, securing the win.

the mating pattern is not unheard of, but it definitely is unusual
