Symbolic: Status Report 2007.04.23

Symbolic: Status Report 2007.04.23 Work continues on getting the cognitive searcher ready for its debut on FICS. This should happen by the end of this week assuming that I can get Feisty Fawn (Ubuntu 7.04 Linux) up and running on the 3 GHz P4 box by then. A few bugs were found in the Lisp code. In o...

Re: inhereted old computer

One concern with older machines like the one you've inherited is that the cost of the electricity may be higher than the value of operation. In any case, I suggest that you dump Windows 95 and get a copy of Damn Small Linux: http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/ One claim: "Run light enough to power a 486D...

Re: Mac XCode and 64 Bit

I should elaborate my answer a bit. Leopard will almost certainly not support G3 PowerPC machines and many users of older hardware including myself aren't too happy about this. The only real difference between the G3 and G4 PowerPCs is the the lack of a vector processor on the former, and this is re...

Re: Mac XCode and 64 Bit

Yes, Mac OS/X 10.5 (Leopard) should be available later this year and it will (supposedly) have an LP64 programming model. Xcode 3.0 is to be included for free.

Re: Opinions on best software to develope C++ code with

I'll grant that VS/C is probably the best tool for developing a Windows specific GUI. But that's about it. I've had to use MS tools for many years starting in the late 1970s and they've always been a disappointment. And yes, I had to deal with VS for a long time, but only when someone has paid me to...

Re: Opinions on best software to develope C++ code with

It's good to develop using *all* of these compilers. Each of them will give you different error messages and, if you stick with only one of them, it's possible to code-in non-portable mistakes and not know it. True. I'd go further and suggest different host platforms as well to avoid lock-in of all...

Re: Symbolic: Sample code / Transposition repository

Program assisted learning is unlikely to be implemented soon, although it is in the plans. More important at this stage is to get a base version of the cognitive searcher up on a server; this will help tests the fundamental mechanics of the program and also serve to set a low-water benchmark.

Re: Symbolic: Sample code / Transposition repository

At the moment it's using about 3 ms of the 200 ms per node average budget. There is no rating yet, although I hope to have the cognitive version running on FICS before the end of he month. It will probably be around 800 elo at first.
