Re: buying a new computer

I am looking for a new computer since it has been a while. I saw a 2990wx with 16 GB ram, 2080ti, 500 SSD drive for 3k. Overall do you think this is a reasonable deal? Will this be a good setup for a few years? I know new chips are coming out, but will this be good "bang for your buck"? I know a fe...

Re: Any engines solve this one?

Fantastic position! I think the main problem for Stockfish is that it doesn't see Bxh7 and Rxg7 sac from far away. Even if you click the moves it takes a while to realize this is winning. Leela is clueless a well even if you show it both Bxh7 and Rxg7. Would you mind sharing the opening moves? I th...

Re: Why there is no interest in Computer with odds Vs Humans match?

Perhaps with a sufficiently lost position, the whole concept of evaluating in terms of win probabilities (derived from games where mistakes are made sometimes) is more fruitful than the AB approach of attempting to delay checkmate for as many moves as possible. This will look like a "bluff", but at ...

Re: Whatever is current - Amazing Leela

I think that falls outside of the scope of this thread (where I've been claiming you should focus on the relevant chess lines instead of generic chess lines, so if it's "not played as often in engine tournaments" that means the line is generic), but, sure, I'll see what I can do about those lines a...

Re: Whatever is current - Amazing Leela

Ovyron, It is understandable you do not want to post your analysis in the main lines of a popular opening. However, how about some lines that are not played as often in engine tournaments? Can you show a path to advantage for black after any or all of: a) 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 (with ...

Re: Lc0 question

How have some humans determined these engines are playing badly? In openings, it's pretty easy to demonstrate even if we grant an initial assumption (which we shouldn't!) that human input is of no value at all. Engines, in games, only spend minutes per move at most. Humans have used the same engine...

Re: Why there is no interest in Computer with odds Vs Humans match?

I see no reason that the engine play different move in the opening. The engine can be programmed not to play different move in the same position. Yes, but the drawback of that approach is that it may allow the opponent to prepare very deeply down the only line it plays, which also makes obtaining d...

Re: Why there is no interest in Computer with odds Vs Humans match?

Takeback odds is an interesting idea. I play odds games against computers regularly and will have to try it. Against a top engine, perhaps the human should not play normally and only use the takebacks when they realize they've made a mistake. Instead, we should play in a way that takes advantage of ...

Re: Whatever is current - Amazing Leela

I agree and if somebody really has an analysis that busted entire openings then he can earn money by selling this analysis to the top chess players(rating above 2700) who are going to use the analysis in important public games so we are going to see the relevant lines in public games. This is also ...

By the way, a fun example of the sort of chaos that ensues when white plays Bg5 in the Italian just occurred in top human play a few days ago: https://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2019-gr ... Ding_Liren
