Easy engine to use for testing

I've been working on my standard chess engine (c#) for what feels like a very long time and I'm ready to start testing against other engines. What is a good choice of opponents to use against a beginner like me. I'm at the point where I want to try to make my eval a bit smarter. I started with Warri...

Re: Null Move Help

I'm getting a lot of draw results, even with the transposition table disabled. About 50% of the games end in a draw. I have repetition detection and I return a score of 0 when a repetition is encountered. Am I doing that right? Should I be returning a lower score when it sees a repetition, or skip t...

Re: Null Move Help

I have a duo core and my program is single threaded so with cutechess-cli I run 2 games in parralel. Is there an option I have to enable to use multiple cores, or is it automatic? I also have duo core but it looks like it's only playing 1 game at a time. My engine isn't very fast yet so I don't thi...

Re: Null Move Help

Sorry I'm not that familiar with terms yet. What does 6"+0.1" look like in xboard syntax?

Re: Null Move Help

I setup cutechess-cli for the first time. What are good time control settings for self-play testing? I read somewhere I need like 1000 rounds to get an accurate ELO, is that true for self play as well? This is what I'm using now (40 moves in 60 seconds): cutechess-cli -engine conf=Pwned1 -engine con...

Null Move Help

I'm trying to implement null move pruning and I'm not sure how to test it. I want to determine if my simple implementation is actually working, or if it's pruning too much. eg, null move off I get f4f5 d6f6 f2g1 (score is 56) and with null move on the best moves are e4e5 d6d5 f2g1 (score is 48) Is i...

Re: qsearch in crafty

There's an ICGA paper I wrote on the subject. I just wanted to post a thank you to Bob et alia. for the help on this subject. It took me almost two months but I did finally get my c# engine to use the rotated bit boards described in Bob's paper. The pawn move generation was probably the most diffic...

I gave my nephew Mario Chess because anything without Mario is a waste of time in his opinion.

Re: Capture video & sound?

Strange that it wouldn't record the board. FRAPS is usually the one that always works.

I've also used Camtasia (windows & osx) but the full version is pricey.

Re: Capture video & sound?

I have always been a fan of FRAPS. Works for almost any game (chess or high frame rate first person shooters).

It's Windows only though. You will probably need to convert the videos to h.264 or some iPad friendly format after making the recording too.
