Re: SEE is too slow

Instead of thinking and saying 'slow', resolve slowness into two measurable factors: time to depth = node_count / NPS With SEE in Search() you expect a reduction in NPS; SEE is more work than MVVLVA. But node_count should drop even more because of the improvement in move ordering, giving a net win f...

Re: Seirawan Chess at my ICS

It (timestamp) had the wrong permissions. After
$ sudo chmod 755 /Applications/Xboard/timestamp
everything is OK. Thanks for your help.

Re: Seirawan Chess at my ICS

This works to log on to your ICS:
$ xboard -ics -icshost 80.100.28.169

This works to log on to FICS:
$ xboard -ics -icshost freechess.org

The installer put timeseal and timestamp at what looks like a bad place:
/Applications/Xboard/
Where should they be?

Re: Seirawan Chess at my ICS

Is that winboard only? I have xboard for Mac but it seems unable to connect.

Code: Select all

$ xboard --version
xboard version 4.5.2
$ xboard -ics -icshost 80.100.28.169 -icshelper timeseal
xboard: Connection closed by ICS

Re: First steps with SMP

The CPW pseudocode is a corrupted version of the algorithm. The original:
http://supertech.csail.mit.edu/papers/startech.pdf
has abort_and_return s, which is much easier to believe and understand than abort_and_return b.

Also, one line is missing from the CPW code.

Re: First steps with SMP

Fail hard would be returning beta (β). But in the Jamboree pseudocode what is returned is a different variable b. It represents in some sense the best score so far, but is updated and used in a way that I cannot yet follow.

First steps with SMP

I have just implemented the first step of multi-threading my engine. It can search on the main thread and a parallel one simultaneously, each returning the same score and PV without crashing. Node count at any depth is exactly doubled by the extra thread. (All this is of course with the shared TT of...

Yes. It's an escaped space character. Paths on the Mac often have spaces.

Re: UCI, xboard protocols and interfaces for Mac OS X Lion

/usr/share/games is the directory that according to Debian standards programs in /usr/games should look for their data files. So the Debian package for fairymax does put the fmax.ini file that contains the move-generator tables for all of the supported variants in /usr/share/games/fairymax/fmax.ini...

Re: UCI, xboard protocols and interfaces for Mac OS X Lion

I've tried "Xboard 4 - 1.5.3 - macintel" package and install fine. When i run xboard by clicking on it, as i do in windows, it say me that "the first chess program (fairymax) exited unexpectedly" then the obvious errors related to broken pipe, with that program. Then he said that "piece-description...
