Re: The Stockfish of shogi

In Fairy-Stockfish the base piece values are the same for all variants, they are only adjusted for a few rules that can heavily influence dynamics like losing chess rules, piece drops, and board size (for sliders). E.g., for drop games, the piece values are scaled by a v_max/(v_max+v) formula, wher...

Re: The Stockfish of shogi

Yes, that was a bit of an overstatement, I meant that the terms are the same, while the piece values (apart from rook and bishop) and a few other things of course differ. However, the evaluation function is quite generic, i.e., it chooses/modifies the evaluation terms based on the rules/features of...

Re: First knight odds match with IM Saturday

Does this Komodo uses Neural Network evaluation derived from training or just a standard Eval? It combines info from a standard Lc0 net with Komodo MCTS analysis in a proprietary way. Does this combination leave out Komodo's legendary evaluation function, or is that included in the mix as well? It ...

Re: The Stockfish of shogi

Actually many of the top shogi engines are very similar and based on Stockfish (Dolphin, YaneuraOu, Apery, ...), but their strength comes from the evaluation files they use. The evaluation files are no (deep) neural networks but as far as I know just some coefficients for low-order polynomials of p...

The Stockfish of shogi

I recently got a very strong, free shogi engine called "Dolphin - Kristallweizen-kai" that is based on Stockfish, adapted for shogi. It is just incredibly strong. It is rated about a thousand elo above the world's top human player, and based on games with 2017 computer champ Elmo it is about equal t...

Re: First knight odds match with IM Saturday

Hi Larry, thank you for answering. I don't have a good i7 as of now (will be purchasing big ThreadRipper soon though). I do have a very good GPU though. My ELO rating is low 23xx but I stopped playing many years ago during big raise. I am between 2500 and 2600 on Lichess blitz which is close to GM ...

Re: Women World Fischer Random Championship 2019 Next Month in USA

I will not support a tourney that discriminates based on gender. I'm inclined to think the post was a joke, as I doubt that the poster would have knowledge of such an event that no one else would have. But be that as it may, in what way did you support the FRC championship just held that did NOT di...

Re: First knight odds match with IM Saturday

It's still hard to believe for me that you can lose a rapid game starting N up if you just play classical openings and keep the centre. I mean playing the Sicilian or Bogo-like opening allowing white to take space can't be an optimal strategy in those. I would love to try it myself. What kind of ha...
