Re: Mate in 72

Are you sure Chest did not just find the solution in it's database? Either that or you have the worlds fastest computer. It's not a matter of database cause Chest doesn't find it at once with others than SearchMode Automatic or Auto Turbo XKP or XPK. These 3 settings only bring the mate immediately...

Preempting Rh8+ from the initial position and playing out rest of the game with 90+30 time control. [d]2k5/3b2R1/7R/P3r3/2r5/8/1K6/8 w - - 0 1 1. Rh8+ Kc7 2. Rh3 Kc6 3. Rc3 Rb5+ 4. Rb3 Rxa5 5. Re: Can it be Saved?

That line I gave wasn't meant to be the best...I threw it out tongue in cheek....it's hard to hold the position if you can't exchange a pair of Rooks. I see no way to force an exchange so it's hard to force a draw. I'd likely lose White's side even if best moves draw. It isn't easy for a rusty olde...

1. Rb6 Rxa5 2. Rb3 Be6 3. Rc3 Rb5+ 4. Ka1 Rxc3 5. Rc7+ ( Kxc7=) Kd8 6. Rxc3= :) And just to show, how not so bad an engine can fail going on with your line, another one not so much longer: 2k5/3b2R1/7R/P3r3/2r5/8/1K6/8 w - - 0 1 1. Rb6 Rxa5 2. Rb3 Rac5 3. Re3 Rc2+ 4. Re: Can it be Saved?

Here's a short line. 1. Rb6 Rxa5 2. Rb3 Be6 3. Rc3 Rb5+ 4. Ka1 Rxc3 5. Rc7+ ( Kxc7=) Kd8 6. Rxc3= :) That might work too, the problem is, no engine would play 2... Be6 seeing the following leading to immediat exchange of rooks with at least complete 5 MOB on disk or in main memory. :) After I manag...

Re: Can it be Saved?

Will play out starting from Rh8+ with 90+30 time control. Do so! But if I may give advice, don't trust any engine with too much nullmove- pruning here, Terry McCracken was right about zugzwang. No Rybka, no Robbka will help in such positions. Don't know if Crafty has switched off nullmove pruning w...

Re: Can it be Saved?

Rh8+ seems to be the better move, but whether it leads to draw, no way to tell. So than just one more for the other side. :) 2k5/3b2R1/7R/P3r3/2r5/8/1K6/8 w - - 0 1 1. Rh8+ Kc7 2. Kb3 Rc1 3. Re: Can it be Saved?

Rg8+ is not the best move as it immediately gives more power to an already empowered Bishop while leaving the white King exposed to the attacking Rooks. So you're in doubt yourself again? :) 1.Kb3 you've already tried, 1.Kg8 was Eelco's favorite too, if I remember right, considering 1.Kh8 too? If s...

Re: Can it be Saved?

I think this postion should be a draw but it's no mean feat to avoid all the potential zugzwangs if White fouls up. It's an easy draw like Lawerence said earlier if you reduce it to K+R to K+R+B. GM's have had difficulty in such endings but it should be a technical draw even with all material on th...
