Re: What is the purpose of chess engines?

IMO it makes not much sense to open a door with a TNT bomb instead a key that fits. After using this explosive the house is not there anymore. Ok the door is open. But it makes not much sense. I would like to see programmers use the todays hardware to program intelligent way. No tnt needed. Just cal...

Re: What is the purpose of chess engines?

I said I have it on an old android 10” pad and there it makes 10 NPS and plays marvellous. That’s not I put it on 256 or 16384 cores and it plays strong. Is there an app on iPad ? I doubt because ipad is a closed system. These LC0 NN are very nice indeed. But most idiots only let it run on expensive...

Re: What is the purpose of chess engines?

This is all nice but reminds me on STAR trek 5: why does god need a space ship ?!

Why does chess need this enormous hardware?
When I said programmers have no new ideas I did not thought about using more cores.

Re: What is the purpose of chess engines?

Maybe it is time to leave computerchess. The last innovative development came from Fabien letouzey, an outsider. The next new development from Google via the neural net approach. From insiders there was nothing. Despite clones of known sources. Programmers are not interested anymore in chess. They a...

Re: What is the purpose of chess engines?

The problems are not the chess positions where you can find something,
The majority of chess positions has nothing to find within a range of x plies.
And if you try to find a move or plan via tree, you play lousy.

Re: What is the purpose of chess engines?

... So, here is a list of uses of chess engines that I can think of: ... I summarize all of this as : "find the best move in every possible (but legal) chess position". The best move in a position is not nessesary the best move in a game of chess. If you have a plan to mate the opponent king, you m...

Re: What is the purpose of chess engines?

CHESS is about checkmate the opponent king. Most chess engines, if they can’t see the mate, try to capture material. And if there is no material advantage to get, they make a move that is not giving away the game. Then the programmer call this chess. But this is not chess. CHESS is not a test suite ...
