Re: Something is seriously wrong (with romi)

Romi version p3k is one of the engines I use in Tinker gauntlet tests. It typically searches about 3x faster than Tinker. Perhaps this is due to the "minimal" eval (but it does extensive eval pcsq and mobility initialization at the root and ply 1 nodes I think). Anyway, the interesting thing is that...

Trapped Bishop Test Position

There has been code in Tinker for a long time avoid trapped bishops, but a couple of recent games have identified a weakness. In the position below, Tinker sees the trap when the bishop is on h7, but during the search the bishop ends up on g8, and the penalty is not currently set. Unfortunately, it ...

Limiting EGTB Probing For Short Search Times

I know EGTBs (Nalimov anyway) are cached, but what do others do, if anything, to skip EGTB probes for very short search times? Crafty does something like this if (ply <= shared->iteration_depth && TotalAllPieces <= EGTB_use && Castle(ply, white) + Castle(ply, black) == 0 && (...

Re: The simple truth ...

How much of Romi's sucess would you say is due to learning vs without?

IIRC, Tinker would often trounce Romi in the early days.
Now it is the other way around.

Re: My 64 bit Dell Quad 6600

As an alternative, I would like to suggest my recent experience. I got a Q6600, 4GB, 300GB drive on eBay for about $800 with shipping. Note that this is without a monitor, but I have several of those around anyway. It is a G0 stepping model CPU, so it overclocks quite well. (Note that there may be b...

Re: What's the role of the GUI?

Nalimov format, however, is not acceptable for this purpose, as its use is restricted by an unfair licence policy.
Just wondering what is deemed unfair?

Re: Arena Time Forfeits

FWIW, 199B5 has the problem, and another post at arena forum indicates that 1.1 (last stable version?) does as well.

Re: Arena Time Forfeits

Yes, I know.
With an inc of 2 seconds, Arena.debug input to WB engines should never be less than 200, but it is.
UCI engines get the correct 2,000.

Arena forum post indicates it may be fixed in the 1.99B5 beta version.

I was using B4.

Arena Time Forfeits

It has been some time since I have used Arena. I am testing Tinker against a number of other engines at 1 min plus 2 sec increment, no pondering (on Q6600, Vistax64). It looks like nearly 10% of the games are time forfeits. Examination of the arena.debug file indicates an Arena issue. The time/otime...

Vista Premium x64 with Visual Studio 2008 Express Edition

Anyone using this combination?

If so, is downloading some SDK needed ?

Thanks
