Re: 32 core Threadripper about 100M NPS

https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/amd-threadripper-3970x-review Now that they are here, give it a couple months to see if there are any issues with the new chips or MOBOs. Whining about the early pains of every new release gets old. Personally I'm waiting for 3990X official pricing before making ...

Re: What is the purpose of chess engines?

Right now LC0 is a tactical failure. If you are looking only for engine improvements, work on search. Perhaps AB rollouts to augment MCTS like tried in Komodo. Perhaps this can also keep additional CPU cores loaded. As it stands now LC0 cannot be trusted for analysis alone without tactical checks wi...

Re: What is the purpose of chess engines?

Opening prep and analyzing complex quiet positions. Opening prep is not just about finding novelties. I look for lines where the required moves look somewhat counterintuitive and have long sequences of "only moves." Let me clarify "only moves." I'm not talking about moves necessary to avoid instant ...

Re: Ryzen problems - AGAIN!

Many of these complaints are self-inflicted. The problems the OP complains of are old as computers themselves. Some people learn from history some don't but the computer industry is perfectly consistent. Back when I ran PCDOS I noticed that when a new version came out, early adopters got burned ever...

Re: PCI express 4

Latency of flash reads are the bottleneck (iops at queue depth 1) not bandwidth over the bus. Won't make any difference with current flash speeds.

Re: PCI express 4

It is my understanding that the only card slightly pinched by the pcie 3.0 spec is the 2080 TI. "If" NVidia makes a new card with the 4.0 spec, their flagship will get a small boost.

I doubt it will make a significant impact for chess.

Re: 2950x SMT ON and SMT OFF

How many positions did you use and how many times did you run each position to calculate the time to depth figure?

Re: LC0 bad search and poor tactics

One interesting note on the search after reading more about it. If I understand correctly what I was reading on the discord, they implemented a dynamic CPUCT where the value changes to prune more heavily as search deepens. This is similar to AB engines which also prune more heavily at deeper depths ...

Re: LC0 bad search and poor tactics

Chess in essence is a positional game while shallow tactics are just shortcuts to finish a game quicker. Of course missed tactics can destroy a game in one move sometimes, but I think you have to understand than NN chess is still in its infancy and there at the moment it plays chess totally differe...

Re: LC0 bad search and poor tactics

I have moved zero goal posts -thank you. You can rail at the moon all you like and it doesn't change that a 1 node search doesn't "solve tactics." A typical queen sacrifice tactical position will not be "solved" by looking at all of the legal moves one side can play and getting a NN opinion back. Th...
