Rewriting a engine from scratch is painful but the results will be worthy. I've redone my own engine twice, and am doing it again (new data structures, new search, new eval, new xboard support). Don't give up. Your new engine will be much better than the old one. And, after all, the fun is in the cr...

In my case, I don't allow reductions in neither PV nodes nor passed pawn advances. This help a lot.
