Re: Perft(14) completed!

Hello Peter: My perft(14) calculation is now finished and the result is: 61,885,021,521,585,529,237 It seems reasonable given earlier estimates, but obviously needs independent verification. Congratulations for this huge task! There are some estimates, some of them quite old: 61,803,489,628,662,504...

Re: Determining From squares

Hi there, I have this pgn parsing routine which puts the moves in a generic list. This is C# so I have something like this: List<Move> moves... So "Move" would have a Move. From and Move.To. When I add to the move list, I have to know what the from and to sqaures are given a move from the pgn. So, i...

Re: pinned pieces in eval

The side that does not have the move can pin pieces, while the side thathas the move has no captures. And what of the position below? [d]k2q4/p7/4p3/3r4/4QB2/8/2P3PP/5K2 w If white is to move, QxR is losing. c2-c4 is a non-capture, and thus not searched in QS. So white will stand pat, and return ev...

Re: Hello World

I would make an optional Blind database of sound files to download with a lot of different words and phrases... Then... have a verbose option for say... the ICS chat window. PlaySound(TEXT("C:\\Windows\\Media\\Windows Balloon.wav"), NULL, SND_FILENAME); Use something like this with the d...

Re: Winboard/Xboard patch request

So I don't think this can be solved from WinBoard. It is a problem in the engine. It could be that an engine trying to open its ini or log file runs into the same problem that WinBoard ran into when it tried to open the PGN, and croaks because of that. Okay. When I have more time, I will test witho...

Re: Winboard/Xboard patch request

Getting to this took too long. Your latest code looks good. Tests good. The average appearance was somewhere in 3-8 msec, so I would think it would be "lag" = hdd_seek_time + multiple attempts of 10 should work given that the odds of 10 attempts would equal atleast one full hdd_seek_time ~10 msec, w...

Re: Winboard/Xboard patch request

I checked it out, and in WinBoard DoSleep(n) is #defined to Sleep(n), which definitely interprets n as msec. Yes, this is correct. Sorry for a late reply. We could then always count on DoSleep to be msec, and use it in a random-wait before retry. I am trying your code with my random waits of about ...

Re: Winboard/Xboard patch request

I have now uploaded a version that prints the raw error number together with the message (same link). I could not test it because I could not think of an easy way togenerate errors. Could you try that for me? It should still give the same problem, but I would want to know what exactly that problem ...

Re: Winboard/Xboard patch request

What OS are you on? Windows Vista 32-bit What you describe should _never_ happen. It does happen. I've mentioned this before... A call to fopen should only fail when there is something wrong with filename (e.g. non-existing directory, no permission to create a file in the directory, etc.). It has t...
