Re: Neural Networks weights type

It seems as though NNs don't require much accuracy. A couple of data types they tend to use: * half precision - link * brain float - link TPU's are a bit like graphics cards, but they use low precision arithmetic, which enables them to do much more NN work for the same amount of hardware. It seems a...

Re: History of Memory Wall in Computer Chess?

I still find it hard to believe that it was MS-DOS that dominated the OS scene. In the much of the computing environment, the rule was that whatever IBM did became standard (ever wondered why your keyboard has an alt-gr (alternative graphics) key?). When IBM announced the PC, all of a sudden there ...

Re: How to not receive notifications from the "Chess Thinkers Forum" ?

We try to replace moderators to rescue CTF. The major problem of the last months was that the moderators did not delete Right wing propaganda and racistic postings. IMO a very big mistake. So a few right wing guys spammed the whole forum with tasteless disgusting threads. So you all think CTF is on...

Re: History of Memory Wall in Computer Chess?

Why the port of Sargon I to the PC is only 50 times faster is not very clear to me, if you look at clock-frequency alone the speed became at least 1000 times higher, and the IPC is much higher too. I would expect the port to run at least 1000 times faster, I wonder what the bottleneck is. We could ...

Re: History of Memory Wall in Computer Chess?

Probably not what smatovic is talking about - but before Windows took over, DOS used to have a limit of 640K of conventional memory. Device drivers became available that would allow you to have either "extended memory" or "expanded memory" above that limit, and, for some reason, the following defini...

Re: Sure no one here can beat this simple free smartphone engine!

Now I I said a few days ago that I was going to pit Samsung Galaxy S9+, using Droidfish which is Stockfish against Samsung Chromebook Plus with an intel 1.5 to see which is stronger I only play 5 games at T/C 10+5 sec increment S9+ Won 3.5 out of 5 games. I would expect that result. I cannot praise...

Re: What happens with my hyperthreading?

Hmm, so what's left? Windows SMT and maybe some kind of CPU micro-code update? -- Srdja Any possibility that before, other processes were consuming threads? Maybe if the older machine was slower, Windows itself needed more thread time. Or maybe it was a different installation, with more crap (Micro...

Re: What happens with my hyperthreading?

With mine i7 4790 4 physical cores, 8 logical, I seem to get a tremendous boost from hyperthreading with both SF_dev and SF NNUE, especially SF NNUE. Did something happened with Intel hyperthreading on Windows 10 and I am unaware of? A couple of ideas: 1. CPUs have become better at running threads ...
