Re: New DeepMind paper

This is quite interesting … there might be some surprises yet! Maybe chess DOES follow a statistical path but it just needs enough data to set that path into stone. More realistically though, I think that there will always be some permutations when statistics fall and some tactics will be missed......

I wonder if the relentless advance of the machine was a factor in Gary Kasparov's retirement?

Re: New DeepMind paper [MuZero]

I picture it as an Immense Evaluation Function, say, some 80GB of chess data that stores chess patters and is able to tell you what is the best move by looking at the patters on the board and studying the structure of them to arrive at the right move without any search. It seems to me that you are ...

Re: New DeepMind paper [MuZero]

I can't believe the whole forum isn't a-buzz about this! For the simple reason that its another nail in the coffin of the AB Engines and since most of the old die-hards here swear by AB Engines, you can't realistically expect them to be ecstatic about this new Development. :) There was lots of disc...

Re: New DeepMind paper

I would think that each human player has this experience. Most of us weren't told 'you may not start playing chess until you have passed a test to prove you know the rules'.

Re: Tactics cannot be very important for chess

But what is the "plan"? Has to be to checkmate the opponent's king. If you can't see a way to force that, then you seek a way to reach a position where that goal is more reachable, even if you can't see it. But think about it, the game of chess is not infinite. So it is theoretically possible to se...

Re: Tactics cannot be very important for chess

Because some positions require tactics, and others require strategy, perhaps something like Ferdy's Aiquiri could have the solution, by having a strategical engine and a tactical engine suggest a move, and have a third judge engine that knows what the position needs pick one of the moves. It looks ...

A strategic move does not need calculation, you could tell them apart on a program if it finds the move without any search.

Two quotes for my archive on one page. This is an EXCELLENT thread! 8-)

Re: Tactics cannot be very important for chess

If one has built a fast-searching engine, one jolly well SHOULD tune it to seek tactical complexity! :P I don't think so. Or, at least, that experiment has been tried. Tuning a chess engine to solve tactical test sets definitely lowers the strength in game play. That's not quite what I meant. I int...

Re: Tactics cannot be very important for chess

"Tactics is what you do when there is something to do. Strategy is what you do when there is nothing to do." I like that: I've added it to my archive! 8-) BTW, the NN engines do not prove that tactics is not important. They prove they can avoid it against conventional engines. But the conventional ...
