Thanks, but I really did very little. Credit should mostly go to Cfish and Intel.
Let's give the credit to Stockfish then :-)

Of course, but I was fearful of having to recurse back to the Big Bang.

I just assumed everyone was going to get it right, I find incredible that if I kept going I'd have found +M26 and would have been the only one with a correct answer. Guess that completely shreds my "no skill required" part, huh?

Though, I guess this isn't different from resigning winning positions...

Week-6 is up, not that hard I estimate.

Slowly running out of suitable positions, top engines are so good....

Hi Ed,

Just FYI , since I see you posted the solutions, on the third position. all 11 legal moves come back with a mate score:
[d]1k3b1q/pP2p1p1/P1K1P1Pp/7P/2B5/8/8/8 w - - 0 1

Code: Select all

and your submitted solution is flawed!

Code: Select all

1. Kd5 {1. Bb5 Qg8 2.Bb5} Qg8 2. Bb5 Kc7 3. Be8 Qh8 4. Bf7 Kb8 5. Kc6 Qg8 6. Kd7 Qh8 7. Ke8 Kc7 8. b8=Q+ Kxb8 9. Kd8 Ka8 10. Kc8 Qg8 11. Kc7 Qxf7 12. gxf7 g5 13. Kd8 g4 14. Ke8 Bg7 15. Kxe7 g3 16. f8=Q+ Bxf8+ 17. Kxf8 g2 18. e7 g1=Q 19. e8=Q# 1-0
after 18. e7, black should play Kb8? extending the mate 8 more moves, hence both Bb5 and Kd7 both lead to mate in 27 - I should get credit for the correct answer and I believe a bonus point for pointing our the error in the line presented!

Code: Select all

If this were a mate in x inquiry then you are right, but it isn't. It's about the best move of a composition (study) and there are only 2 good moves (Kd5 and Bb5) that lead to the theme of the componist, to get the white bishop on f7 via e8.

As in the Kubbel composition (if it had not been a mate in x inquiry) no one (and the componist in particular) is interested in the silly 1...Kb7 after 1.Rc8+ and in this study the point of the composer is that black just is one tempo short to draw. Moves like 18...Kb8 19. e8Q+ Kc7 20.Qg6 with loss of the pawn are irrelevant to the theme of the study.

As you know, Ed. The dog ate my homework.
BTW, I have literally tens of thousands of positions that are nearly insoluble.
If you want to turn the planet's PCs int smoking piles of junk, just let me know.
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.
