Game 22: again a premature draw call by the GUI

Post by Jeroen »

In te return game Komodo tries a different approach, without winning back the pawn. Unfortunately, at move 18 the GUI calls it a day, adjudicating the game as a draw after several 0.00 scores. I can't see a forced draw yet, so the sudden ending of this game is quite unfortunate.

Game 23: Komodo defends after being a pawn down

Post by Jeroen »

In the Portuguese gambit of the Scandinavian Stockfish remains with an extra pawn. Black has some compensation, as pawn d4 is isolated. Amazingly, Stockfish first puts its own pawns on black squares (a5 & b4) and finally 'kills' the g4-g5 lever by playing 45.f5?! After the latter white is unable to breach black's fortress.

Game 24: SF's exchange sacrifice enough for a draw

Post by Jeroen »

Stockfish chooses a different approach: 8... Kxf7, 9... Re8 and then the exchange sac 11... Rxe3! As the complications end, Stockfish wins back its pawn and draws without too much difficulty.

Game 25: shortest draw of the match

Post by Jeroen »

In the Lisitsin gambit Stockfish takes no risk and grabs the first opportunity for a repetition of moves. It is the first time ever I witness an 11 move draw in one of my testsets :-).

Game 26: small edge for Komodo, but yet another draw

Post by Jeroen »

In the return game Stockfish tries to hold on to the extra pawn. But Komodo is slightly better, as black's pawn structure is compromised and white has the two bishops. When all the rooks comes off the board, it is clear, though, that the game will end in a draw.

Game 27: quick exchange of queens, draw

Post by Jeroen »

In the Staunton gambit both engines decide that a queens exchange on move 9 (!) is the best way to go. Already at that point the draw looks rather clear.

Game 28: eventful game ends peacefully

Post by Jeroen »

Komodo makes more of white's gambit and at move 13 black's position doesn't look very solid. Komodo decides to give its queen for two rooks, at that point there is a huge difference of opinion: Komodo believes white is clearly better, while Stockfish just says '0.00'. At move 49 the situation is suddenly reversed: Stockfish now thinks black has the edge, while Komodo indicates 0.00 scores. At move 61 black looks clearly better, but the strong 62.Rxf6! saves the day.

Game 29: slight Komodo edge, not enough to win

Post by Jeroen »

The Korchnoi gambit of the Dutch Defense is rather murky, but fun to watch. Komodo keeps its extra pawn, but after the exchange of queens Stockfish wins it back. After that black has a symbolic edge, not enough to change the verdict: draw.

Game 30: unusual, onorthodox game ends with a draw

Post by Jeroen »

A very unusual way of playing the opening is shown by Komodo. Black seems to be better, but strangely enough the balance doesn't seem to be breached anywhere in the game.

Game 31: potential interesting gambit ends peacefully

Post by Jeroen »

The 4.e4 gambit in the Semi Slav used to lead to interesting games, but currently it looks more like a forced draw. Stockfish picks 8.Ne2 (instead of the more enterprising 8.Be2) and Komodo has no difficulties to hold the balance.
