Code: Select all

Hi Frank

Its fine to give away everything gandalf-stuff you have away.

Thank you for doing this!

Im not sure which state Gandalf-7 is in. If I get "happy" with Gandalf-7 ill
give it to you to give it away. Have not worked on G7 in along time so
i will not promise G7 will be a reality anytime

Version 6.01 of Gandalf comes from Lokasoft. Not a free version I got but after all I remember is the beta I have on the same level and have no copy protection.

Lokasoft company still sells ChessPartner 6 GUI and has the copyright for this interface - therefore former versions cannot be published as freeware.

An old Gandalf 1 demo version (DOS) contains the website from Czech Republic here:

Hi there,

this one is the last Gandalf version!

At first:
Many thanks to the beta tester Andre van Ark.

Andre wrote a short mail (one of the beta testers, have version 7 on the harddisk) to me and I wrote shortly to Steen. Steen gave his permission.

Steen Suurballe wrote me:

Code: Select all

"Yes its OK. However, If I remember correctly, I think there is a small bug in the SMP code so it sometimes will crash (fixed in current beta, but this beta is still not good enough and I can not guarantee it ever will be finished)"
Maybe we get the permission to release the last version of the opening book by Dan Wulff too (at the moment not included).

Andre wrote me:

Code: Select all

"This version beated Deep Shredder at the Leiden tournament many years ago :-) However, DS was (much) stronger at that time."
OK ...

Now I added Gandalf 1 DOS (information by Norbert-Raimund) and UCI Deep Gandalf 7 in the big Gandalf download file (now 119Mb). People downloaded the file today or yesterday can download UCI Deep Gandalf 7 as stand alone version from my download area too.

Again, not my success!
Thanks to Andre, Norbert-Raimund and again Steen Suurballe.

PS: If the AnMon programmer read that ...
Do you remember ... Gandalf vs. AnMon ... most spectacular matches in older times I ever seen. So ... if you have a newer version of AnMon ... for fighting 10 years later vs. Gandalf ... please let me know.

:-)

I wish me a chess computer with: Wasp, AnMon and Gandalf and the computer chess World is fully OK in the year 2017!

Hi Frank,

I don't think that this is a good idea - for 2 reasons:

1) I doubt that this Gandalf 1 has anything to do with the Gandalf of Steen Suurballe - it's a Dutch program written by someone else.

2) It's programmed with an old Turbo Pascal version and does not work at all on nowadays (fast) computers ("Runtime Error 200") - although this problem could be solved by a patch, I think this would be a waste of time (because of point 1))

Franz

One question, Frank:

Does this Gandalf 7 (beta) really only exist as 64bit version? :(

Hi Franz,

I was never beta tester is the past for Gandalf 7.

But I am sure that this tournament Version of Gandalf 7 was optimized with maximal power for the tournaments. Never a release version of Gandalf 7 was available and no reason for the programmer to create a w32 version.

Furthermore, Steen do nothing here since many years.

I think we have to life with the versions we have.

Best
Frank

PS: I know that you like w32 (I too). But here we can do nothing. Steen isn't working on it and we should accept that and not asked him for w32 ... means after all what I read from him in the last days.

Hi Frank!

I was just wondering about this 64bit version, because it's more than 10 years old,
and I don't think that in 2006 64bit programs were already as usual as today.
But ok, it's just a pity ...

Nevertheless many thanks for all your other uploads - really a great and interesting stuff! :)

Franz
