On-line engine blitz tourney October

Post by hgm »

The monthly on-line engine blitz tourney for October will take place on:

Saturday October 18, 3pm Boston time (21:00 Amsterdam time)

(This assumes daylight-saving time is still in effect in Boston.)

To connect:

winboard -zp -ics -icshost winboard.nl -icshelper timeseal -fcp ENGINE.exe -fd ENGINEFOLDER -autoKibitz

(for UCI engines, add -fUCI)

This is on the same ICS as last month's tourney, which is a different one from that used last year (which suffered a head crash of its HD). So if you did not participate recently, chances are that you need to apply for an account first.

Join the Stockfish team.

But remember: participating is more important than winning!

Fix bugs.

Take the (totally won) game against Fairy-Max in the main forum (which ended in a draw by an unfortunate promotion). Does your engine ever see that the promotion leads to a draw (it won't on the first iteration, but it should see it quickly/eventually if you give it more time)? If it sees it eventually but it takes a long time, figure out why. If it never sees it at all (which would be worrying), find out why.

This is why it's important to sometimes look at games. Scores can tell you that your engine is not winning games, but tweaking the evaluation is pointless if it's not winning them because it fails to correctly mate a lone king (say).

That is a dinosaur address from the 90s, probably ICS when did not even split between FICS and ICC?

Gaviota lost on time against Arasan and it looks very weird. I thought it was a draw. I am trying to understand how it is possible to lose on time when it is the opponent move? At least the pgn recorded by xboard gives Gaviota the last move. According to the logs, Gaviota was pondering when it received the 0-1 notice. Previously, time was 800, gaviota thought for a 0.2 seconds, moved, started pondering, and did not receive anything but the forfeit notice several seconds later.

I am guessing this was a lag problem, otherwise, xboard should have recorded that it received a move from the opponent, right?
