This game was really interesting. The kind of game you rarely see with humans. Gaviota sacrificed a rook for three pawns and the whole thing went wild. It had the chance to get the exchange back (to make it N v PPP), but did not and preferred to keep increasing the piece activity. The whole thing payed off later. At the end, the move 60. Rh6 was cute.

This is easy for engines, but I think it is very instructive for humans.

Here, Gaviota played Qd4!? rather than the normal Nxe5. The maneuver e5 e6 Ne5-g4 and Re5 (with the idea of Rg5 etc.) is interesting.
[D]r5k1/3b2pp/3q4/Pp1Pr2n/4P3/3Q1N1P/3B1PP1/4R1K1 w - - 1 32

Rh6 is the only move (Kg6 Rh6 checkmate!), and it needed to be taken into account when Gaviota played Kh5 a couple of moves before. Nothing difficult, but the position is nice to see. Of course if gxh6 Qb3+ and mate soon.

WaDuuttie did rather well this time against the multicore monsters.
BTW, I noticed that the top-8 engines all played 5 times the white pieces... amazing.

Indeed. This can only happen when they all play opponents from the lower half in the last round. Which should only happen if they all met each other at an earlier round.

Indeed. Texel's new NUMA awareness and speculative transposition table prefetch gave a nice NPS improvement on the 16-core computer, but in the game against WaDuuttie this was not enough:

At first Texel's king seemed to be in a lot of trouble but later it turned around. Texel then failed to find 45... axb3 and the game eventually ended in a draw.

Indeed. Texel's new NUMA awareness and speculative transposition table prefetch gave a nice NPS improvement on the 16-core computer, but in the game against WaDuuttie this was not enough:

This is an interesting position. They key is not finding axb3, but the maneuver Ra8 Qc7 and Qa5 afterwards, which is not that difficult. Gaviota prefers axb3 but insists on e2, which is pointless. SF sees the whole thing immediately. I will check this later, but sounds like a null move thing to me.

So, in this position (after axb3 axb3), the move is Ra8.

I'd love to be able to include Nightmare in future 8 core tourneys I run.
The UCI protocol in Nightmare is only partially implemented, all parameters are hardcoded. This is something I have to improve, but for my personal use it is not very important.

I can make an executable for you when I know how much memory it may use for the TT, how many cores it may use (presumably 8) and where it can find the Nalimov table bases (if any).

Crafty has also been slipping behind. I had one good tournament with it a while back, but other than that it really struggles.

On the other hand, when I run Gaviota, I always feel that with a bit of luck on its side it has a chance of a top 3 finish or better. And it often achieves it. Miguel ran it himself of course today.
Indeed, there is some luck involved in winning a tournament, opening preparation is very important as well.

Crafty is not weak at all, but it has some weaknesses with respect to king safety that hinders its performance.

Nightmare also has weaknesses, I am aware of most of them, to address them is something else.

Crafty also got seriously out-booked on a couple of occasions, which it never recovered from.

I don't think most understand the goal of a book line. It is NOT to exit the book with a positive score, for example. It is to exit the book with a position that the program can actually play well, even if the initial evaluation is -.30 or something similar.

The book that is distributed with Crafty is NOT "that book". It was intended to offer a reasonably "wide" book to be interesting to play for humans, not to provide reasonable positions for tournaments with other computers...

I used a special book given to me by Peter a while back.
