I ran a shootout from the position after ... Rd4 with nine strong engines, plus my own modest engine. White never lost.

Code: Select all

128 MB hash
Intel i7 960 @ 3.20 GHz
1 CPU

Shoot out:
----- Time = Blitz 2m -----
Critter 1.6a 64-bit ½-½
HIARCS 14 WCSC 1-0
Junior 12.5.0.3 ½-½
Komodo 5.1r2 64-bit 1-0
MadChess 1.3.04 1-0
Rybka 4.1 SSE42 x64 ½-½
Shredder 12 UCI 1-0
Spike 1.4 1-0
Stockfish 2.2.2 SSE42 1-0
Zappa Mexico II x64 1-0

Score White: 85%, 10 Games
Thank you for the results. Very interesting. Now, finally, we're talking facts rather than hand waving...

Lyudmil is too biaised to see the truth
Theory and practice sometimes clash. And when that happens, theory loses. Every single time.

Lucas, please repeat the same shootout from position N2:
[D][D]1r4k1/2bbq2p/8/p1p1p1p1/2PpPp2/1P3P2/P1Q2BPP/3R1RK1 w - - 0 33
which follows almost in a fully forced way from the main position, and report the results, if you do not mind. I already asked Erik to do so, I hope he will be able to complete another test run. Or, alternatively, you could run shootouts with different time controls with Disco of both positions. You will see that, even though Disco might evaluate both positions almost equally, it will lose with black often in the first position, but almost never in the second.

The problem with engines is that do not see the right continuation from the main diagram, which necessarily includes playing f7-f5-f4 for black, followed by further storms. If you do not play f7-f5-f4, it is very likely that you are going to lose with black.

I hope very much someone is going to post results with such a shootout, to be able to talk facts, and not just to wave hands :D

The data may be irrelevant. If, as Lyudmil suggests, engines simply do not know how to proceed in such positions, then the results from engine testing simply confirms their ignorance.

Let's have Lyudmil play Black against Stockfish, starting from

[D]1r1r2k1/2b1qp1p/b1p3p1/p1p1p3/2P1P3/1PN1BP2/P1Q3PP/R2R2K1 b - - 0 25

I assume he'll start with Rd4!!

I do not know about Stockfish, but I can challenge DiscoCheck for the title of average chess champion. Disco will represent the average engine side, and me, the average human side. :D

OK, DiscoCheck plays 26. Bxd4

Hi Louis.
You make me laugh :D
There is no way to control the fairness of competition. Perhaps Disco will use Stockfish for advice, or I might use Disco to decide on my moves...

I would urge again any chess friend to make the suggested shootout, starting from the second position, and kindly report the results. I would confess defeat if white scores better in the shootout. There should not be big difference between the 2 positions in terms engines evaluate them, but in the second one there is simply no way to go wrong, while in the first there is, and therefore shootouts show white in advantage.

Or, if Lucas wishes, in the second position he might put a knight on d3 instead of the bishop on f2, I do not mind.

I notice that when Stockfish eventually captures the rook on d4, it immediately replies to the recapture cxd4 with c5. For example,

Code: Select all

info depth 46 seldepth 61 score cp -121 nodes 12855780744 nps 7984664 time 1610059 multipv 1 pv d8d4 c3a4 a6c8 a1c1 g8g7 c2f2 f7f6 a4b2 c8e6 b2d3 b8d8 f2c2 d8b8 c2e2 b8d8 d3b2 d8a8 e2c2 a8b8 e3f2 e7d6 f2d4 c5d4 c4c5 d6d8 c2f2 d8e7 d1f1 b8d8 b2a4 d8b8 f1d1 e6c8 f2c2 b8b4 c2d2 c8a6 a4b2 b4b8 b2d3 a6c8 d1e1 c8a6 e1d1

Yeah, that might be another option, possibly good, black continues in the same way, with Bc8, f5, etc. I do not know what happens then, black will still have attacking opportunities on the king side, but white will have some counterplay (though slow) on the queen side. Possibly Na4 is the much better move, but Stock does not even consider f5, which is the real black threat.

Louis, do you have any idea how Stock evaluates position N2 from the actual game that I posted?

If you mean this position

[D]1r4k1/2bbq2p/8/p1p1p1p1/2PpPp2/1P3P2/P1Q2BPP/3R1RK1 w - - 0 33

then Stockfish thinks White has a small advantage:

Lyudmil Tsvetkov wrote: Louis, do you have any idea how Stock evaluates position N2 from the actual game that I posted?
If you mean this position

[D]1r4k1/2bbq2p/8/p1p1p1p1/2PpPp2/1P3P2/P1Q2BPP/3R1RK1 w - - 0 33

then Stockfish thinks White has a small advantage:

Code: Select all

Thanks Louis.
It is interesting how Stockfish gets from +1.62 score at ply 1 to only +0.28 at ply 40. Search is great :D

However, if you had to hit that position 20 moves earlier, the engine would think that black is considerably worse, and probably discard it automatically.
