Why do you need 1 and 2 rather than 0 and 1? Does the array really have 3 elements (unknown, white and black)???

The reasons for using 1 and 2 as indices have gone in the meantime, but at that time it was really an array with more than 3 elements where the two color bitboards were at positions 1 and 2 and bitboard no. 0 had a different meaning. This has been changed now, so the discussion is obsolete.
