I contacted the authors, and this at least solved my problem: there is an environment variable OSL_HOME that needs to be set to the installation folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\gpsshogi). The installer does this, but it does not get noticed until you reboot (which I never do on my laptop, because it takes forever...). The other PC had once suffered a disk crash, which lost the system settings when I re-installed the system. (But GPS Shogi was on another partition, so I never re-installed that.)

Now that I redefined the OSL_HOME variable and rebooted the PC, the old GPS Shogi works again. On my laptop I just moved the GPS Shogi files of the letest version I just downloaded to what is apparently the default path name (to avoid rebooting). This makes GPS Shogi start, but when I try to make it play it just forfeits on time without moving. I guess it needs more memory than is available on my laptop; it does not seem to have a hash-size option.

I don't understand Larry's problem. Normally 32-bit executables should have no problem running on a 64-bit system.
