In examining the log you posted earlier, I am still concerned about this:

I am not clear what the timing is here, but Scid is asking the engine to ponder, then stopping it, then putting in a position and requesting a search. So this indicates a ponder miss to me. The engine log looks like the engine is trying to do this in the correct order. So I see it ponder, then I see it stop, then I see the new search start (so the depth resets to 1). What I don't see in between the ponder and regular search is a "bestmove" command, which the engine is supposed to send, which concerns me. But also, IIRC, the GUI should not send anything after "stop" until it receives "bestmove": "bestmove" in this case is going to be discarded, because we had a ponder miss, but it serves as a signal to the GUI that the engine got the "stop" command and is ready to receive "go" again.

So I am not clear if this is an engine or GUI problem but I think the GUI is not doing this handshake correctly.

Arasan has a compile time option enabled by defining UCI_LOG that will dump some diagnostics to a file, so you can see what the engine is doing during a UCI session.
