I'm trying to download the source code. Is there a tarball for it ? All I have is this link which is horribly impractical

It's the URL of a Subversion repository. You can use any Subversion client to download the repository contents using that URL. I'll start testing OctoChess in my Open Source Bullet rating list, once I've finished with Rodent 0.12, Faile 1.4 and Olithink 5.3.2. Watch my posts in the tournament forum for those interested.
