I think the only detail that matters is (a) is your program original? if not, (b) do you have permission from the authors of code you copied to be "the one participant" for that "family"?
There should not be any mention of Belle on the DT applications. Absolutely no code was copied. Ken had no "code" to copy. While Hsu used a silicon compiler and project MOSIS to produce his ASIC chips.... |
It appears to be we are the only ones interested in the subject of the "submission details"
If you read the Tilburg Registration Form it only states "Short Program Description" with no obligation or whatsoever to mention the ideas you borrowed from others either by private talks, forum posts or studying open sources.
When I go through the history of the "submission details" of many you see the pattern I mentioned, the interpretation as used against Rybka isn't the general perception of the vast majority of the ICGA participants through xx years. Check out Chess Genius, Chess Tiger, Hiarcs etc. etc. The submission details are just used as a kind of promotion tool and apparently it is understood as such, myself included.
Furthermore there are the cases of Ferret and Comet, they did not mention in the submission details their creations started their lives as GNUchess. It's all fine with me, nobody doubts Bruce and Ulrich as original authors or want to accuse them of not being transparent but to use an argument that was unclear to the vast majority is pushing the rules to its limits while the ICGA did not needed that all for their case against Rybka.
It's not a big point for me, we all weight different, but I think Marcel has a point here. |
The ICGA also does not mention "the ideas you borrowed..." What is your point? The ICGA DOES mention code written by others and used in your engine, which makes the author(s) of that code members of the programming team that must be disclosed.
Can't speak about Comet, but can speak about Ferret. Which, at the time of its participation, did not have ANY gnuchess whatsoever in it. Verified by my own eyes during a discussion with Bruce about this issue.
Again, this is not about ideas. It is about code... even if it has to be translated to a new form or data structure. |
