I think that solving the open questions around the "Ippolit" engine family will, and must, be possible without the help of Vasik Rajlich. The document of Mark Watkins comparing Ippolit to R3 was a starting point upon which improvements might be possible as soon as we know which exact Rybka version to take for comparison.


Do you believe that anyone is interested enough to do all the work ? Usually the one who was cloned is interested, especially when his engine is commercial. But all we got is just a "it's a clone because I say so". We both agreed that this can't be enough, especially when we consider that we were told the same thing by the same person about another engine (Strelka) in the past.
Watkins report shows that the author(s) of Ippolit had at least some inside knowledge about Rybka, however that was achieved. Whether it can't be judged as original or not is still unclear.
As long the real authors or a team together with the real authors do not try to enter a tournament which have something similar then rule #2 of the icga nobody seems to be interested to finally clarify it. Anyone who trys to enter with an Ippolit follow up will be immediately refused to play as long he does not have the permission of the original authors. If they would have that permission I do not see any problems in participating. There is only one person that clearly could stop all those discussion but he definitely does not want to, because it is "private" or he "does not want to talk about it" or is "typed by hand".
