Yes, the "king captures friendly rook" castling is unconventional for standard chess. It's implemented like that because Cute Chess also supports random variants like Chess960. In random variants the king may have two legal moves to the same target square - normal move and castling move. The "king captures friendly rook" method doesn't suffer from this ambiguity. |
