Robert someone on the Rybka Forum was wondering how you came up with the name Crafty for your chess engine.

With your long line of computer chess history. I will be very curious myself.

It is actually pretty simple. When I got version 1.0 up and running, I had just learned about (at the time) ICS (now not-free ICC). I decided to use that as a test bed since there were a ton of good programs, not to mention IM/GM players there. I don't remember the first names I tried, but I am sure "blitz" was one of them. It was taken. The first one I came up with that sounded reasonable and was available was "Crafty" which is a fairly well-used word used to describe someone that is "clever" (I think I tried clever before Crafty as well...). In any case, Crafty was available, I signed up under that handle, and it sort of became the "name" of the program by default.

So it was sort of a combination of things that led to choosing a word that fit pretty well. No magic or interesting background at all. :)
