Has anything about it shown to be unique from other programs?Jouni wrote:I haven't seen it here yet:

I love it when people come out of the blue with a 2900 elo program, and are selling it to boot :p
I was kicked out of Chapters because I moved all the Bibles to the fiction section.

When did Onno start?
Onno started as a spare time project in the summer of 2006. The first public release, version 1.0, was released in May 2009.
I would not call that (2006) "Out of the blue" Peter. Or are you implying something else? Here we go again ... Fire on Board!

It is the buyers of such that I consider weird.Peter Skinner wrote:Oddly, so does FruitJouni wrote:I haven't seen it here yet:

Matthias.
My engine was quite strong till I added knowledge to it.

The problem: it is an engine for a single processor.

I am fully aware that that is a problem and I am working on changing that.PauloSoare wrote:The problem: it is an engine for a single processor.
Setting up the website, making a faster 32-bit-version then by just changing the compiler switches, evaluating the Intel compiler (without success, btw., Microsoft performs slightly better even on Intel CPU), making an icon, etc. took a little more time then expected, so there was little improvement of play since January, but that will change soon.

I believe that my engine has potential. The reason to start selling now (even if there will possibly not yet many buyers) is not to come out of the blue with a 3000+ engine but to start getting known earlier.
Moreover my engine outperforms some commercial engines (on single CPU). As a freeware engine it would be among the very top freeware engines and thus contribute to the recent increase of freeware engine's level, which is a threshold at the entry level for commercial engines. I believe that this increase is harmful, because it reduces the motivation for quite a few people who have promissing engines to improve it further. So after all it reduces the chances that an engine will catch up with Rybka.
Opensource engines, namely the Fruit branches, will never catch up with Rybka IMHO because they share all their secrets but Rybka doesn't.

Re: New commercial engine soon: Onno
For me, this is the most interesting detail in technical info. The "size" of the seed has absolutely no meaning. Onno plays the same style with a seed of 0 and a seed of 10000. It is not possible to turn randomness off.
When search is randomized and un-reproducible, it is impossible to prove is the program a clone or not, based on its moves.
