Collector's Corner..2007 Annual Physicals ..Continue..

Post by Steve B »

In continuation of my never ending checking on the working condition of the computers in my collection ...

Next in line for its "check up ..from the neck up "is the Saitek Blitz Board
a fairly rare computer and unique in the respect that it is the only chess computer ever released for sale to contain NO keys or buttons for operation
the computer is operated by an unusual dual-dial system where all setting's can be dialed in
the computer is auto-sensory and contains the same program as seen in the far more common Prisma
Kaplan was The programmer and it rates at 1730 elo

Since the Fidelity Elegances(A and B) just passed their annuals with flying colors and were still in the examination room i decided to pit the Blitz against the Elegance B(1764) at 30 seconds per move with the Blitz having White

in the game Blitz was out of book by move 3 searching typically 4-5 ply and examining on average 1200 Positions per second

true to its name the Saitek literally Blitzed the poor little Elegance right of the board unleashing a ferocious attack

[[White "Saitek Blitz Board"]
[Black "Fidelity Elegance B"]
[TimeControl "30 sec per move avg."]
[Result "1-0"]

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 a6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Nc3 b5 5.Bd5 Nxd5 6.exd5 b4 7.Ne4 Bb7
8.Nxc5 Bxd5 9.d3 e6 10.Be3 Nc6 11.Na4 Rb8 12.O-O Rb5 13.Nd4 Nxd4

[D] 1r2k2r/3pbppp/p7/3p1q2/3B4/3P2P1/PP3P1P/R2QR1K1 w k - 0 20
sensing danger the Elegance abandons the G7 pawn to try to get its Queen in position to help against the coming attack
sadly it is too little to late

20.Bc5 d6
21.Bxd6 Rb7 22.Qa4+ Kd8 23.Qa5+ Ke8 24.Qxa6 Qd7
25.Rxe7+ Qxe7 26.Bxe7 Rb8 27.Bd6 Kd7 28.Bxb8 f6 29.Qd6+ Ke8

[D] 1B5r/3k2pp/3Q1p2/3p4/8/3P2P1/PP3P1P/R5K1 b - - 0 29
as i had the "Resign enable " feature engaged for the Elegance it was able to announce at mate against itself in 3 here

30.Qe6+Kd8
31.Rc1 d4 32.Bc7# 1-0

Final Position:
[D] 3k3r/2B3pp/4Qp2/8/3p4/3P2P1/PP3P1P/2R3K1 b - - 0 32

The Blitz board passes its annual physical with a clean bill of health and a
Pretty Mate Regards

Hi Steve,
Let us see a picture of the unit after each successful physical exam.
And most importantly we want to see the picture of the hot nurse who is assisting you.

Dirty old man regards

hi Murat
there are several photos of each computer in my albums already but here is a few:

the Elegance B:
http://new.photos.yahoo.com/cpaa2@sbcgl ... 6786807/67

and the Saitek Blitz Board:
http://new.photos.yahoo.com/cpaa2@sbcgl ... 6871346/72

the Blitz board is really special because it only works with the exact pieces that were made for it
no other magnetic pieces can work with the board

also,it is one of the few auto-sensory computer's i can think of where you can actually slide the pieces and the computer will still recognize the move
you do not have to pick up a piece and then place the piece down
makes for a much more natural way to play ,especially for Blitz games

giving this some more thought...i can think of a few Novag computers such as the Diablo and Super Experts that allowed "Sliding "moves as well..but the vast majority of dedicated computers did not

I like the Blitz very much, altough i do not own it :( Did you ever "flashed" with him?
And my Prisma do not work any more - Display is full working but the sensor board do not react! I must look if i have time....

Have fun with your checking tour Regards José

Steve:
It would be also advisable that after each examination you call a press conference and read an official statement or bulletin about the health state of the machine. I can arrange to get CNN assistance and some NYT articles.

We should not be too silent regards

Excellent Advise my Friend..i will consider it

next examination:

In what can only be called a sadistic match up i pitted the Fidelity Super 9 Deluxe against the Novag Star Sapphire
the Super 9D is rated about 1650 and sported a Spracklen program
housed in the typical Champion Sensory casing but with an information rich display screen and surrounded by the finest Burled wood shipped in from the far reaches of Exotic Persia.
the Super 9D is Ultra rare and Ultra expensive..so expensive in fact that even discussing it costs money

the SS tips the scales at 2150 and sports the well known Kittinger "Attack" Engine

to even things out a bit i gave the White pieces to the 9D and set it for Game/30min while the SS got Game 5 Minutes...
i also made some very minor setting adjustments to the SS:
disabled hash tables
disabled pondering
disabled selective searching (thereby invoking Brute Force searching)
disabled opening book

photos taken during the physical examination :
Fidelity Super 9 Deluxe: http://new.photos.yahoo.com/cpaa2@sbcgl ... 6776115/20

Novag Star Sapphire(not yet undressed):
http://new.photos.yahoo.com/cpaa2@sbcgl ... 6818008/94

In the Game..SS was out of book at move 1

[White "Fidelity Super 9 Deluxe"]
[Black "Novag Star Sapphire"]
[Result "1-0"]

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 Nc6 3.d5 Nb4 4.Bf4 e6 5.a3 Na6 6.Nc3 Nc5 7.b4 Nce4 8.Nxe4
Nxe4 9.Qd4 Nf6 10.e4 d6 11.dxe6 Bxe6 12.Nf3 Qd7 13.Bd3 Be7 14.O-O O-O
15.Ng5 Rfe8 16.Nxe6 fxe6 17.e5 c5 18.bxc5 dxe5 19.Bxe5 Qxd4 20.Bxd4 Rad8
21.Bxf6 Rxd3 22.Bxe7 Rxe7

[D] 6k1/pp2r1pp/4p3/2P5/2P5/P2r4/5PPP/R4RK1 w - - 0 23

and so we have a R+P endgame with the S9D up a doubled pawn
SS has an isolated E pawn...perhaps the best part of the position for White is that Black has only 2 1/2 minutes left on its clock

23.Rfd1 Red7 24.Rxd3 Rxd3 25.Kf1 Kf7 26.Ke2
Rd7 27.Rd1 Rxd1 28.Kxd1 Kf6 29.Ke2 Kf5 30.Ke3 e5 31.f3 h5 32.h4 g6 33.a4
a5 34.g3

[D]8/1p6/6p1/p1P1pk1p/P1P4P/4KPP1/8/8 b - - 0 34
Typical Spracklen endgame brilliance
white reduces blacks pawn moves thereby forcing the black king to retreat and allowing whites King to penetrate the position

34.Kf6 35.Ke4 Ke6 36.g4 Kf6 37.gxh5 gxh5 38.Kd5 Kf5 39.c6 bxc6+ 40.Kxc6 Kf4 41.Kd6 Kxf3 42.Kxe5 Kg4 43.c5 Kxh4 44.c6 Kg3
45.c7 h4 46.c8=Q h3 47.Qc3+ Kg4 48.Qxa5 Kg3 49.Qc3+ Kg4
50.Qc6

[D] 8/8/2Q5/4K3/P5k1/7p/8/8 b - - 0 50

a nice finesse
white guards the Promotion square and then goes for Queen numero dos

50.. Kg3 51.a5 h2 52.a6 Kf2 53.a7 Ke3 54.Qh6+ Kd3 55.Qxh2 Kc4 56.Qf4+
Kc5 57.Qa4 Kb6 58.a8=Q Kc5 59.Q8c6# 1-0

FINAL POSITION

[D] 8/8/2Q5/2k1K3/Q7/8/8/8 b - - 0 59

2150 ELO....
Pffft Regards
