Seemingly 42...Re3! was critical here. And now not 43.Rd7?+ Kh6! 44.Rxb7 Rb3 45.Rxb3 axb3+ 46.Ka1 Qxh2 winning but 43.Qd1! Qxd1 44.Rxd1...
[d]8/1p4k1/5pp1/8/p4P2/P3r3/KP5P/3R4 b - - 0 44
Now after the natural 44...Rb3 white seemingly can hold the balance with 45.Rd8 (i will spare you the lines here) therefore: 44...Rf3!? and now 45.Rd7+ Kh6 46.Rxb7 Rxf4 and now the best try according to the latest stockfish is 47.b3 Rf2+ 48.Kb1 axb3 49.Rxb3 Rxh2 but this seems to loose
[d]8/8/5ppk/8/8/PR6/7r/1K6 w - - 0 28
50.a4 Rh5! 51.Rb5 g5 52.a5 g4 53.Rxh5 Kxh5 and this is a table base win for black:
54.a6 g3 55.a7 g2 56.a8=Q g1=Q+ and wins in 51 moves:
[d]Q7/8/5p2/7k/8/8/8/1K4q1 w - - 0 35

Anand was in serious trouble and was lucky to draw. Somehow Carlsen activated his pieces and got Anand in a difficult position. Svidler in the live commentary kept saying the word "unpleasant" to describe White's endgame.

This is a psychological victory for Anand then. I think he'll win the second game because of it.

He's the underdog, he didn't play for the short draw like last time and he squeaked out a draw in an "unpleasant" position so he should feel less nervous and more confident. The first match he just psyched himself right out of the match before it even began.

It's Magnus, youngest WC, strongest in history, blah, blah, blah He does have the experience and that will count once he gets his bearings.

and i just dont see how scraping out a draw with white in the first game is going to do much for that confidence. but i hope youre right. id like vishy to get one last hurrah before the reign of magnus truly begins.

It was better than losing the first game of a world championship match which would have been disastrous so he did not win against the world champion, he drew him which is an even wash.

I remember going on ICC and looking at the black's position after his 19th move and it looked like he was coming under attack.

Houdini 4 liked Bh6, as well as Zappa Dissident,Junior 2010 (psycho),StockfishMZ & Deep Fritz 13 34) ... h5?? was the howler, other than that he could've held the position. He must have choked cause anyone can see that you do not want the Q & R hooking up together at the G spot.

Other programs liked h4, some veered towards Qg4

Nice game but Carlsen really out played Anand the whole game. Very good game. If this game is any indication looks like Carlsen will win without any real strong play from Anand.
