World Micro Computer Chess Championship 1984 photos

Post by MartinBryant »

I was looking through some old photo albums and came across some from the 1984 WMCCC in Glasgow. I've put these on my website at http://www.colossusgames.co.uk should anybody be feeling nostalgic! If you can recognise any of the people and/or computers then please let me know and I'll credit them.

Great pictures!

By any chance are you starting to work on Colossus again?

Well... hmmm... don't hold your breath... but I would never say never :)
With 64-bit processors being the norm now I had thought it was about time I converted Colossus to bit-boards... so who knows!

Hi Martin,
thanks for sharing the photos. Wonderful! Some remarks ...

> e) I remember speaking to this guy... but I can't remember who he is!
He looks like Kaare Danielsen of LogiChess (WMCCC 1981, WMCCC 1983) and Enterprise (WCCC 1986), but since his programs were not playing in Glasgow, I guess he helped Ulf Rathsman or Peter-Ingolf Gericke and Klaus Heyne of Conchess operating?

> f) Any ideas? Hmmm... smoking was still allowed in doors!
no idea, may be Peter-Ingolf Gericke and Klaus Heyne with girl-friend?

> g) I vaguely remember that two scottish students were paid to operate one of the programs. Are they the pair on the right?
no idea, operator of Sargon3/Compaq?

> h) The tournament hall. Looks like Kathe Spracklen front left perhaps sat opposite Richard Lang? Mike Valvo (tournament referee) front right?
Yes, Mike Valvo.

For f) and g) based on board positions we may identify the games ;-)

Cheers,
Gerd

Nope, Gericke and Heyne already out of business with Consumenta, in 1983 Conchess continued under the aegis of Johan Enroth's company Systemhuset.

Hi Martin,

Thanks so much for the pics. As I work with retouching pictures on a regular basis, I took the time to run them through the process, and am sending them to you via email.

All the best,

Albert
