The greatest game ever played has to be among 2 computers

Post by pichy »

My personal opinion is that the greatest chess game ever played is not this one by two correspondence players, but it is still undiscovered and it has to be among to computer engines. Your goal would be to evaluate which of those games played by tow engines deserve this recognition

You can replay this game with your favorite engine and evaluate or check for a possible better move, if you can find it

I think such a thing cannot be judged objectively. It's all subjective and based on aesthetic appeal and other intangible factors.

There is one objective way to judge it however. If neither side ever made an error (in the game theoretic sense) then it was perfectly played. In other words the game almost certainly would have to end in a draw and neither side at any point had a win (due to an error from the other player.)

I know that sounds pretty dry and boring.

You are correct by saying that if neither side made an eror, since GM Yakov was clearly winning but made many wrong moves specially here on this diagram.

[d]r3kb1r/p1p2ppp/8/1p1n4/3np1bq/2P2PN1/PP1P2PP/RNBQKB1R w - - 0 1

[d]r3kb1r/p1p2ppp/8/1p1n4/3Pp1bq/5PN1/PP1P2PP/RNBQKB1R b - - 0 1

How many engine play 11.cxd4 Bd6! (Instead of exf3)

12.Bxb5+( here Houdini finds Qe2! Much better than the text move played by GM Yakov) this is were GM Yakov Estrin played the blunder move.

You should consider Freestyle chess where teams of humans and multiple computers work together. I've seen some games that go beyond what is expected from computers.

I prefer what Gary Kasparov invented which is GM vs GM playing with the assistance of an engine of their choice, but they can only use the program for two occasions during the entire game. For instance if they think they are losing in the middle or endgame portion of the game they can go to the corner where their program of their choice in running and get assistance twice during the game.

Where is the PGN and why do you select that particular game to be one of the greatest. Did it ended in a draw, if not what program failed to play perfect :?:

One candidate for best game:

Rotlevi - Eljaschoff, St. Petersburg 1909

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nc3 Nc6 4.Bb5 Bb4 5.O-O O-O 6.d3 d6 7.Bxc6 Bxc3 8.Bxb7 Bxb2 9.Bxa8 Bxa1 10.Bg5 Bg4 11.Qxa1 Qxa8 12.Bxf6 Bxf3 13.Bxg7 Bxg2 14.Bxf8 Bxf1 15.Qxf1 Qxf8 16.Qg2 Qg7 ½-½

Why would such a short game be considered one of the best ever played. First of all there was no battle in the middle game neither any creative move or innovation in the endgame. The level of play could NOT be voted as best since there was no effort to outperform the other opponent
