Some new web pages on large Shogi variants

Post by hgm »

I put up some web pages on large Shogi variants in general, and Chu Shogi in particular, tailored to a western audience.

Especially Chu Shogi, a 12x12 Chess variant, seems a highly underrated game outside Japan.

Graphics aren't brilliant!

Chu Shogi is an interesting game. Probably.

Well, I did try to find a GPL set of graphics for chu shogi - but the only thing I could suggest is to ask a CS player.

Have you seen this?

I suggest you ask if you could base your graphics on these.

The problem is that this would make you end up with something like this:

Which, in larger variants, would scale to something like this:

Which is exactly what you would want to avoid at all cost. If you would want to get someone interested to play the game, that is...

"Well, if you feel 16 pieces on your board isn't enough..."

Well, I don't think the number of pieces on the board has much to do with it. What would you prefer to play Chess?

I see what you mean. The graphics are equally flawed.
  • The top ones are extremely difficult to tell apart.
  • The bottom ones look like they were made in MS Paint.
I'd suggest making the bottom ones a bit more polished, and less ad hoc.

I'll dig out AW6.

Sure, that's a traditional chess setup.
