New chess program for iOS today: HChess, by Kim Hungki (sounds like a Korean name).

It is free (the author makes money with a small advertising zone), is a universal application (testing it on iPad right now), and has a nice clean design (though a bit windowsian somehow).

You can play against a friend or the computer.

Q: How good is it?
A: very bad.

Q: Is there any other problem?
A: Yes, the program plays illegal moves. Actually, the author seems to have his very own conception of the rules of chess... You can't castle, you can't capture the queen with pawns, if you take too much time you lose your turn of play, and so on... Also, the game's english might surprise those who have it as their main language.

Q: would you recommend this game?
A: No, absolutely not. As it is, this game is a joke. With some serious debugging it might get interesting, though, as it has a quite nice interface for a good start :

[*] Playing strength improved by about 30 Elo points.
[*] Supports dual-core CPUs, for faster and stronger play on the iPad 2.
[*] Weaker play at the easiest levels.
[*] Numerous bug fixes.

So, Stockfish is now both stronger and weaker! ;)

Congrats to Tord and the Stockfish team! :)
Also a nice improvement is the loading of PGN file, now the position is loaded from the starting position.Which makes my tactical PGN tests much better to use. Thanks Tord for doing this. :)

That's strange -- I don't recall having touched that the PGN code at all. Perhaps I'm growing old.

New iOS chess application: ChessX, by Sebastian Schnell, for iPhone ($0.99, 0.79 euros).

Image

The interface is well done and nice to use, quite complete also, with maybe a small laugher at the "FIDE compliant" tag. :)

The engine is very strong (it pretends to be up to 2600 Elo strong... so I can't help wondering where do all those programmers we don't know take their... inspiration... from?

The best feature is the auto-adaptable strength that seems very well done: the game will soon adapt to your strength.

All in all a good and cheap program.

Is it possible that this well known App was the model for the user interface?
(I hope it´s only that...!).

My pleasure! ;)

By the way, I got my iPad 2 yesterday, so now I can make comparisons... at least with my iPhone 3GS, as I sold my iPad 1...

And the iPad 2 is REALLY really fast.

GeekBench 2:
iPhone 3GS: 47.7 Mflops
iPad2 : 552.5 Mflops (!!!)

GL Bench:
iPhone 3GS: 103 millions multitextured texels/s
iPad 2: 981 millions multitextured texels/s

And I'm just scratching the surface yet... This iPad 2 is a bomb! :)

You're right, the similarities are... troubling... to say the least!

User critics:

So, as I didn't test this one myself here come, for a change, reviews users posted on iTunes:
Pretty good, needs some improvements. 5/5

This app does successfully bring something I have always wanted on my iPad, Live Chess. I feel like I got what I paid for. But here are some things I hope to see in the next update:

- Fix random crashes on iPad 2.
- Make the pieces in 3D mode not pop to the position (when observing a game) but smoothly move to the position.
Fantastic! 5/5

Great app. Great videos.
Needs some serious updating 2/5

I have always and always will be a fan of ICC but this app lacks some major features such as a friends list, the ability to chat with people outside your friends list, and some errors while playing. I think it has great potential in future updates, but for now I would just stick with the iPhone app.
Quite mixed feelings, as you can see...

I have the ICC "Chess at ICC" app for my ipod touch. And have mixed feelings about it.You can seek a game but can't see other seeks so if 2 players seek criteria are not the same then you won't get paired.Lets say you seek for a 5+2 game and you wait for ages to get a match, meanwhile someone else has posted a seek of 5+3 game there is no way of either of you knowing about the other seek. Also once you complete a game you can't quickly analyse with the built in computer opponent which you can play against offline. The recent app "Chess for ICC HD" is only for ipad so I can't comment since I don't have ipad but I hope they improve the functionality.I tend to play most online chess with mobile devices now so am interested in the best app there is.ChessBase is lagging behind with no mobile apps able to connect to PlayChess.

ChessTiger Update

Post by bretti »

New ChessTiger - new name - nice price:

The new version 2011.02 shows the rating from whites point of view (if you want), has more levels and comes with a collection of about 3.600 games from masters and world-champions. Some bug-fixes and engine improvements are also good news. The price is now 0,79 € so everybody who hesitated (old price 4,99 €) should buy this great app right now!

It changes his name to CHESS - maybe to force a better search result at the App-Store. I miss the old tiger-icon and of course the universal App :-)
