NEW Silver Openings Suite

Post by Albert Silver »

This is an update on the original Silver Suite, published roughly 4 years ago, and should be an improvement over the older one, as well as take into account improvements in engines and hardware.

The suite cover most all of the major openings and systems, as well as types of positions. The openings also appear according to their frequency in actual play, therefore the number of Sicilians, for example, is actually proportionate to the frequency they are played compared to other openings, etc. This was done via database statistics in Mega Database 2010 with 4.5 million games.

Beyond the actual openings, I have also strived to include all the major types of formations, such as a stonewall, a hedgehog, an isolani, a KIA, etc.

The positions are reasonably flexible in that many lead to forks in theory where the engines can choose the direction they prefer. For example, the Alekhine position stops after 1. e4 Nf6 2. e5 Nd5 3. d4 d6 4. Nf3

[D]rnbqkb1r/ppp1pppp/3p4/3nP3/3P4/5N2/PPP2PPP/RNBQKB1R b KQkq - 0 4

where theory indicates g6, Bg4, or dxe5 as the main continuations. I tested the major engines and they will choose all of those moves, so depending on the time control, or the engine, all lines can appear. This isn't always true for all openings. For example in the King's Indian Saemisch, stopping after

[D]rnbq1rk1/ppp1ppbp/3p1np1/8/2PPP3/2N1BP2/PP4PP/R2QKBNR b KQ - 0 6

where main theory branches off to e5, Nc6, Nbd7, c5, c6, or a6, I was shocked to see the engines all insist on playing Nfd7, and none of the main lines, even after minutes of thinking.... so in this case, I chose 6...e5 7.Nge2 c6 to represent the Saemisch, after which a new fork appears, and here the engines are both logical and varied in their choices.

There are 50 positions in all, leading to a round 100 games. All positions have been tested with at least 5 top engines, each for a couple of minutes to be sure variety and theory were there. Needless to say, a lot of work went into this. I hope you enjoy it.

Open Notepad, paste the game scores, change the default file format from .txt to All Files (*.*), and save as SilverOpenings.pgn (for example)

aha, thanks much. this looks perfect for me in numerous ways as i usually try to do 100 game chunks + this appears to leave a lot more wiggle room than the noomen test suite i have. thanks again!

Re: Silver Openings Suite (PGN)

The mainlines of the Bird opening are not very good for white. You might consider another line, such as this variant with d3 and g3:

[Event "?"]
[Site "?"]
[Date "????.??.??"]
[Round "?"]
[Result "*"]
[White "?"]
[Black "?"]
[ECO "A02"]

It is true they aren't great scorers, but I think claiming the above position to be superior is incredibly debatable in spite of what DB statistics may show. If you give them to engines, I think they will score very similarly. As to testing, I prefer mine as it asks the engines a few interesting questions regarding how they play the e5 square and the long diagonal, which is not obviously covered in other positions in the suite. The above line will usually go two routes: White will push e4 and black will exchange, or white will push and black will push back d4. The latter will lead to positions with only minor differences from the KIA and Closed Sicilian, both of which are already in the suite. Just my 2 cents.

As an aside, there are positions that are notoriously hard for engines to play, and could almost be considered losing, such as the Sicilian Pelikan, or the KI Classical, but to not include them would also defeat the purpose of the suite: maximize openings and types of positions. It should ask the engines a ton of questions on how they handle all sorts of situations.
"Tactics are the bricks and sticks that make up a game, but positional play is the architectural blueprint."
