Scid Pocket v4 released

Post by pgeorges »

Hi,

I released a new version of Scid for Pocket PC at
http://scid.sourceforge.net/scidpocket.html

Scid Pocket runs on Windows Mobile PDA and has a lot of features :
- compatible with Scid for Windows, Linux and MacOs (http://scid.sourceforge.net/index.html)
- play online (FICS)
- play with an external board (Novag Citrine via bluetooth)
- engine tournament
- 13 engines included
- etc.

This 4.x version is now compatible with Scid's new database format.
Scid 4.1 source code for ARM is available at http://scid.sourceforge.net
with a port of the chess engine Robbolito which clearly wins against all the other engines I ported so far (Toga, Glaurung, Scorpio, etc.).

Note 1 : I am fully aware of discussions about Robbolito, but my feeling is that it looks like the claims made by SCO Group some time ago regarding Linux. Just claims, suspicions, no real evidence and then they failed in court.
http://www.chesslogik.com/rybka3.htm sums up this stuff.
Note 2 : I have no intention to open another troll here !

There is a utility called NetChess (http://home.arcor.de/bernhard.wallner/netChess.html) that allows an engine remotely. The server and client are programmed in TCL.

It can be possible to port the client to the pocketpc and so that ScidPocket could use a engine remotely on the computer?

Nice idea, and not very hard to rewrite from scratch in order to launch Scid on a PC and ask it to send engine data to a Pocket PC. But do you think it is necessary ? Who manages to draw against Robbolito running on a simple basic ARM processor ? My current guess is that Robbolito is at least 200 ELO points over other engines I ported, so it may be around 2700-2800 (very rough guess of course).

I normally do not play against the program. I even have difficulty making draw with a port of TSCP on the PDA.

But the system has 2 advantages:

1. Any developer of an engine can use the PDA with internet to access the engine on his home computer, you do not have make a port of the engine for the pocketpc. Some programmers use a notebook or netbook for access remotly example in the world championship.

2. Any fan, following a game could continue the analysis on the PDA, but can choose the desired engine and with the power that enables home computer that will always be larger than the PDA.

I installed pocket scid 4, however robbolito doesnt appear in the engines list.

What do I need to do to configure in order to use it?

Thanks for the update. And also for Robolitto, now why could'nt Vas have made a port of Rybka to PPC if you could do so easily with Robolitto.(Perhaps the not the same after all)Considering the huge exe of Rybka to Robolitto.
Will be interesting to test against the new PF4 with new Hiarcs 13 engine.

Hi Rafael,
I have downloaded scid version 4 ppc and after installed robbolito does not appear anywhare. That guy was talking about version 4.1 and that version still does not appear on the website, the latest is 4.0, so I think we have to wait a little.
Best regards.

Just read the website.

The guy want MONEY for ScidPocket 4.1 and RobboLito.

I reported this post to the moderation, the links is still there.

Looks like links to Robbolito are forbidden, but if you want to sell RobboLito you can advertise it here...

So if someone wants the link to Robbolito for Windows, contact me by PM and send me 100€ with PayPal.

Merry Xmas.

Misunderstanding here : Scid Pocket is under GPL, no fee charged : if you don't want to donate, you can run "make" by yourself. If you want a binary CAB file, either you download 4.0 (the binary is on my site), or for 4.1, I ask for a donation (which is different from a license fee). Robbolito is only one of the 13 engines provided with Scid Pocket. I do nothing wrong here (asking for a donation is quite normal).

Robbolito is released under GPL, and there is no real evidence for me of it being a clone (I don't want to restart the lengthy arguing, here). If I had any doubt, I would not have used it. As I stated in my initial post all this reminds me the SCO trial against Linux some years ago... (see also http://www.chesslogik.com/rybka3.htm or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rybka)

But, if the rules here forbids a link to a port of Robbolito to an ARM CPU, then moderators should delete this thread, and I would say goodbye to this forum.
