World Cup Knock Out

Post by swami »

Interesting tournament underway.

I've seen a lot of games, I'm impressed with the playing style of Wesley So of Philippines. His moves in a game against Gadir Guseinov are no-nonsense aggressive ones.

Though Grischuk has a better chance of winning this event me thinks.

And you?

Whose players playing style did you like most and who has a better chance?

I consistently like Karjakin. His like a good mixture of the old Soviet-school active playing style with very good technique and very active repertoire (1. e4, Najdorf with black against 1.e4). And Grischuk has always been one of the coolest players around. I also cheered for the Armenian players - Gabriel Sargissian and Tigran L. Petrosian but they're both out unfortunately.

Ivanchuk. As far as I know, a first player who beat Karpov & Kasparov on the same tournament

I would not call it brilliant as Ivanchuk had several opportunities to draw by perpetual check, but decided to burn all bridges. It seems to me that Ivanchuk tried hard to lose and succeeded.

Ivanchuk was also in severe time trouble (not at all unusual for him) and actually lost on time, although his position at the end was probably hopeless anyway.

Ivanchuk will be eliminated if the next game is drawn... so the risk involved here for him is very high.

So accepts the draw offered by Kamsky in a winning position. So is the first to qualify for the next round.

Ivanchuk might be feeling better now.
