Cheaper Alternative for DGT Board

Post by menniepals »

Hello, I am planning to buy a DGT board but it seems the price is very prohibitive. Is there any alternative to this? Thanks, Alfred

The Novag Citrine should meet your needs for aroung $360 US.

Exactly what do you want to do with it?

I am planning to use it along with Arena and freeware engines specifically Fruit, Toga, Glaurung, Stockfish, Rybka...too many to mention. Can Novag Citrine use these engines?

I have used it to play some of those engines and many more including my own engine. So, the answer is yes.

Scan this forum for the word Citrine using the search button at the top. There are several posts about it
and some references to youtube videos using it for just that purpose.

The biggest differences between the two are:
1) size (DGT is bigger)
2) Citrine comes with a chess playing program in it (DGT doesn't)
3) DGT can attach other things such as chess clocks.

What about the interfaces? If I remember right DGT supports USB but Citrine is just serial ... don't think I have a serial port on any computer I have left! So you might need to add a USB->serial adapter too.

You can always buy a USB to Serial Adapter. Cost should not be over $30 USD :D

one could use the Leonardo/Galileo/Renaissance as input/output unit
using it under ARENA.

Can you please provide a link for step by step instructions?

I have a Renaissance with a serial adapter/cable.

Thank you

as far as i remember there are device drivers for the OSA connection ... the idea is as follows: an UCI engine that has only the job to do the connection with ARENA. then you can either play against this uci engine

= play against your board and arena is bringing move by move into the GUI so that you can SAVE the game later... or

play against another PC engine . this way you can let your board automatically play against other UCI engines under arena.

there is a discussion about this in the schachcomputer.info forum. this discussion is in german but maybe i can translate passages for you in english.
